I will be exploring realism vs. dramatization, stigma and perception, treatments, the impact it has on families, as well as the long-term consequences of PTSD. II. Body A. Summarize the Media/Movie (Topic Sentence): American Sniper is a movie about Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL sniper in the Iraq War. It shows his journey from growing up in Texas to becoming a skilled sniper in the military. The film follows his struggles with the moral issues of war, his difficult relationships, and the mental toll of combat. While it was praised for its portrayal of Kyle's story and Bradley Cooper's acting, it also sparked debate about its depiction of war and Kyle himself. a. The movie explores moral issues surrounding war, primarily through the experiences of Chris Kyle. As a sniper, Kyle is tasked with killing enemy combatants to protect his fellow soldiers. The film depicts the ethical dilemmas he faces in taking human lives, even when it is for protecting his country and his fellow soldiers.
b. The experiences of Chris Kyle in the Iraq war greatly affected his relationships in several ways. His deployments took a toll on his relationship with his wife as well as their kids. He struggled to reconnect with his family and adjust to civilian life. c. The combat took a toll on Kyle’s mental health. He struggled with PTSD, experiencing flashbacks and nightmares about his experiences in the war. He also felt a lot of guilt about the lives that were lost and questioned himself on why he survived instead of others. B. Summarize Research on Psychological Concepts (Topic Sentence): Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event, series of events or set of circumstances (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). It encompasses various psychological concepts and findings. a. PTSD is characterized by a range of symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, fight-or-flight response, and so on. This occurs from experiencing traumatic events such as combat, sexual assault, natural disasters, or accidents. b. To be diagnosed with PTSD, symptoms must last for more than a month and must cause significant distress or problems in the individual's daily functioning (2022). Although others often experience symptoms around the first three months or longer. c. People with PTSD can get better through the help of family and friends, while others may need psychiatric treatment or professional help. PTSD can be treated through cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication.
d. Cognitive behavioral therapy includes cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, group therapy, and so on. Medication for PTSD, on the other hand, includes antidepressants such as SSRIs and SNRIs which are mainly used to treat major symptoms of PTSD. C. Apply Psychological Concepts to Movie (Topic Sentence): In the movie, Chris Kyle, is a Navy SEAL sniper who served during the Iraq War. It follows his journey from growing up in Texas to becoming a highly skilled sniper in the military. Kyle faces many challenges, both on the battlefield and at home. He struggles with the morality of war and the impact it has on his family. a. In this movie, Kyle shows symptoms of PTSD such as flashbacks and nightmares, difficulty sleeping, hyperarousal, outbursts of anger, and so on. b. Kyle’s symptoms lessens as he tries to treat his PTSD by taking medications, talking to counselors, as well as joining a group of veterans who were going through similar things. He also found comfort in spending time with his family, which gave him a sense of purpose. III. Conclusion A. Closing Statement : The movie shows how PTSD affected Chris Kyle. It's not just about what happened in the war; it's about how it stuck with him even when he came back home. Kyle struggled with his feelings and his relationships because of what he went through. It is important for everyone to understand and support people with PTSD as they try to move on from their experiences and heal.
