1. Reflect on how your child's infancy and early child development might have differed if they were raised in different circumstances. I chose to not have a full-time job as long as David was 3 years old and Bethany was 12 years old, and as a result, my child was raised in a semi-dangerous neighborhood with relatively high crime rates. My child also had to go to a home daycare that was not the best quality. I think this led to David being more aggressive than the average child against me, and other children. I think it has also led him to be less compliant with rules and requests. In addition, I think that if I was more firm with David, and maybe incorporated some scolding, the rules of what is right and what’s wrong would be more clear to him. But I chose, several times, to only remove privileges instead of scolding. I think this may contribute even further, to David being more aggressive and less compliant. David has also grown to be a little shy, and it takes him a while to get comfortable with strangers. It also took him a while to develop close relationships with the children at his daycare. This might have been a result of me not pressuring him to go to new environments and leaving the decision up to him to interact with others or not. I also chose to pull back when David started to cry with new strangers and people. I think I should exert a little more pressure and coax David into getting comfortable with strangers. 2. What decisions have you made regarding your child’s media use? Why did you make these decisions? How do you think these decisions might impact your child's development? Regarding my child’s media use, I made decisions based on two factors: my childhood and current research looking at the effects of screen time on children’s development. In my childhood, I remember growing up on Disney Channel and those were really good memories
when I came from school and looked forward to a new episode of Wizards of Waverly Place. But I think where it started to become a negative presence, is when it was done in excess and with no limits to what the content was. Moreover, current research shows that media use may be correlated with poorer cognitive development, depending on the content (Weis & Cerekonksy, 2010). Therefore, I made sure to restrict screen time to half an hour and to educational content. I think in doing this, I maintained the quality of the parent-child interactions as well as the quantity of interactions (Linder et al. (2020). 3. Are there other aspects of course content that connect to your child's development between 9 months and 4 years? Or areas in which your child's development does not align with research? Please feel free to share any additional reflections. My child David is developing to be a little more aggressive and temperamental in the way he behaves with other kids, despite having scored higher than average on warmth and affection. Furthermore, it contradicts research in that I chose to be a full-time mom and not take David to daycare until he was around 3 years old (Vandell, Burchinal, & Pierce, 2016). I thought this would alleviate any potential behavioral issues and neglect that would cause him, but that led us to make less than favorable choices in the neighborhood we chose to live in and that may have indirectly caused bad behavior. I chose to allow David to watch educational content as well, but I think the focus on language and cognitive skills has caused me to neglect gross and fine motor skills through activities such as playing ball. When I was a kid, I didn’t really do those things till I was around 2nd or 3rd grade, so I just assumed it would be too soon to expose those things to him. However research is showing how outdoor and adventurous play is beneficial for kids’
