Post an explanation of the role of theory in research. Before determining the role of theory in research, it is necessary to define the term "theory" as a scientific term. Burkholder et al. (2016) state that the term's meaning changed, at least in part, as a result of scientists and philosophers misusing it, leading to confusion about the terms "theory" and "hypothesis," where a hypothesis is merely an educated guess about a subject, topic, or situation, whereas a theory is "a set of concepts and relational statements that organize scientific knowledge in a focused way." Theories serve four functions: explanation, description, prediction, and change. The functions provide direction for research and serve as a means of testing and measuring the ideas and connections within the theory (Burkholder et al., 2016). Identifying and learning about theories necessitates a distinct search technique from other inquiry forms (Walden University, 2015). Considering several psychological perspectives, including human development, cognition, personality, and motivation, will create a broad way of thinking. Next, identify a theory in your discipline and explain its basic tenets. The tenets of a theory are the fundamental principles upon which it is founded. The theory I chose for this specific discussion is Cognitive Learning Theory. Cognitive learning theory describes how internal and external elements affect an individual's mental processes to augment learning. According to Babbie (2017), the inductive technique begins with observations, and theories are suggested near the end of the inquiry process as a result of observation. It entails looking for patterns in observations and developing explanations for those patterns through a sequence of hypotheses. Cognitive learning theory emphasizes the relevance of mental processes in learning, focusing on how good cognitive processes facilitate learning and contribute to long-term memory retention. It also evaluates the importance of intelligence, skills, planning, and motor abilities in learning outcomes. Cognition is the act of understanding, seeing, and processing information, particularly in connection to brain function and mental processes. Then, with this theory in mind, consider your answer to the question posed by Drs. Burkholder and Burbank in last week's reading: "What do I have to believe about the world and human beings in order for me to accept or use this theory?" (p. 27). Accepting and applying a specific theory requires a comprehensive knowledge of one's worldview. This includes comprehending one's worldview and thoughts about humans. In my instance, the uniqueness of personal experiences and unexpected cognitive shifts is essential. While certain phenomena may generate comparable responses, each individual's experience is unique and should be considered (Burkholder et al., 2016). Every human has a way of thinking and theories and research can support those thoughts.
Describe the extent to which the epistemological and ontological assumptions of your chosen theory align with the philosophical orientation that reflects your worldview. The epistemological assumption of cognitive theory agrees that our own experiences impact our perspective of the world. The idea also accepts that knowledge is relative. The theory disagrees with the notion that knowledge is entirely subjective or that there is no such thing as objective reality. The theory holds that there is a distinction between what we know and what is accurate and that seeking objectivity in our pursuit of knowledge is critical. The ontological assumptions of cognitive theory begin with direct elements of human cognition rather than its collective summary, as portrayed in language. It is a set of categories used to reflect the mind's organization. Reference: Babbie, E. (2017). Basics of social research (7th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. Burkholder, G. J., Cox, K.
