This also helps children learn to empathize with people who are different from them. Materials: Cardboard poster, Scissors, Glue, Colorful construction paper, Pictures of different cultures. Procedures: 1) Gather students into small groups 2) Give each group their supplies including Glue, Scissors, Construction paper, Cardboard poster, and pictures of different cultures. 3) Fold. Cut or tear paper into different shapes. 4) Children should be able to create a theme for their collage 5)Assemble the pieces before gluing them to the cardboard. 6) Once you have everything in the correct position they may began gluing. 7) Let the collage dry 8) Present to class and or teacher with explanation. Questions: Why does that person have a different skin color? Adaptation 1: Race and physical appearance. I would explain to children that everyone looks different from one another, whether in height, hair color, hair texture, skin color, eye color, facial features or even down to the type of clothes they wear. Adaptation 2: Cultural background. I would explain to the children that are numerous cultures in existence and that everyone enjoys different things. This does include Religion, there are many kinds of religion which everyone follows and each one has a set of beliefs. This includes holidays because not everyone celebrates holiday’s including Christmas, thanksgiving, Halloween and more. Reflection: (How will you know students learned the objective?) To me I think I will see children learning this lesson and objective is seeing them go up to different races becoming
friendly with them wanting to get to know them. Seeing children seek out to learn more about their friends who are different cultures is a pretty amazing site. Resources: Book was located in classroom Our Diversity Makes Us Stronger Written by: Elizabeth Cole This book could be used in the classroom exposing children to material is one of the most common ways to bring diversity into the classroom. This gives children multiple viewpoint and perspectives on different nationalities, races, languages, abilities, socio-economic backgrounds. Teaching this during a lesson can create and help build empathy and community. Diverse books can serve as mirrors and windows for children’s emotions and experiences, they help build a community, increase students’ empathy, and push back against bias. While teaching this student may have a few follow up questions being how do they respect and celebrate other cultures, What type of diversity do they have in their family? They may even ask what happens when someone is excluded from society, what does it feel like to not belong? And even more questions that go on and on. Some diverse activities you could use with children include creating a culture passport, visiting a library, building connections with other students, exploring diverse art and music and more.
