Page 1 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.2 Cabralina Danielle Fair Smarter Decisions through Psychology August 5, 2023 Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skills and what you have learned about personality traits and emotions, answer the questions in this case study assignment. Remember, you are to help Monica calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem. For each question, you should write a paragraph-length response (5–7 sentences) to receive credit for this assignment. You may use your Sophia tutorials as a resource. Question 1: What are the Big 5 personality traits? Name and describe each of them. Big 5 personality traits: 1. Openness to Experience: refers to the level of intellectual curiosity, adventurousness, expressiveness towards art, emotions or fantasies; and openness to new experiences. 2. Conscientiousness: describes a person's level of organization skills, self-discipline, and willingness to take risks. 3. Extroversion: the level of how socially outgoing, expressive, and talkative a person is. (High levels of extroversion are not the same as high levels of openness to experience.) 4. Agreeableness: how positive a person is towards others based on the compassion and trust they show other individuals. 5. Neuroticism: refers to one's emotional stability and their likely hood of experiencing negative and/or unpleasant emotions. Question 2: Consider the different approaches to the project taken by both Monica and Jennifer. On which of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ? Discuss these differences in their personality traits. Jennifer is high-level conscientiousness; clearly very organized, self-motivated/disciplined, and eager to succeed. It states that Jennifer wants to show Monica that she is serious about their success, which is an obvious sign of someone
Page 2 PSY1010 – Touchstone 3.2 who is highly conscientious. She’s made the effort to organize a guide to help both her and her partner finish their project, and even added somewhat of a step system with assigned roles. To someone whose dominant personality trait isn’t conscientiousness, this could come off as a very intense approach and even seem overbearing or insulting, in the sense that Jennifer thinks her counterpart is incapable. However, Jennifers’ goal was simply to help her partner and herself get a head start on the project so that they could do a good job. Monica is a high-level Neurotic. She’s assuming the worst possible outcome even when she’s considering a solution. It states that as Monica contemplates attempting a conversation with Jennifer, she starts to feel overwhelmed and considers if asking to be removed from the project would be easier. She has negative emotions that surround her outlook, leading the first conclusion she draws to be, “I’ll just avoid the situation completely.” Her Neuroticism results in her not trying things outside of her comfort zone, which inevitably puts her at a low level of openness to experience, as well as a high level of neuroticism. Monica has a previous experience that she’s judging her current situation off of, which really isn’t fair to her partner or to herself. Question 3: Using what you learned about emotions, what advice would you give to Monica? Describe a specific strategy that Monica can use to manage her emotions and successfully complete the project. I think Monica would benefit greatly from learning problem-focused coping skills and receiving biofeedback from a non-bias party. To provide Monica with biofeedback, I would bring to Monicas’ attention that it’s important to be mindful of her own personal subjective experience. It’s likely that she is judging her current predicament on her previous conflict as a stress reaction. So, it’s important that Monica realizes this to help prevent herself from rushing into an irrational decision out of fear of failure. Question 4: If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Monica faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer? Explain how your experience or knowledge can resolve a similar workplace conflict. If I were in this situation, I am confident that I would be able to resolve it with little issue. I personally have dealt with so many similar situations myself and over the years the thing that has helped me the most is practicing mindfulness. I still sometimes have very simple situations and conflicts that I let stress me out so badly I consider the most drastic approach. Then I realize that it’s all based on my fear of something ending as badly as it has in the past.
