Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the biological perspective . I chose to identify Jean Piaget, who came up with the Jean Piaget's theory, which focuses on the 4 stages of mental development that children pass through. This theory represents how children gain knowlege and understand things. The four stages are: 1) Sensorimotor(18 up to 24 months old), 2) Preoperational ( between 2 and 7 years), 3) Concrete operational( between 7 and 11 years) and 4) Formal operational ( adolescent and adults). 2. Provide an example of how this biological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. I'm not sure that I can identify an example for myself, but I definitely paid much more attention to and watched as my children grew how they learned and understood things. I think most parents have read books on children's growth, especially with the first child. We even kept track of certain milestones with our pediatrician to make sure that they were growing at an appropriate rate. 3. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the psychological perspective . I have chosen to identify Sigmund Freud. His theory is that our childhood experiences greatly affect how we behave as adults. He also theorised that we have no free will in making decisions, but instead that we unconsciously make decisions based on what we have previously experienced. He explained the human mind like an iceberg, in that only a small amount of our actions are apparent, while most of our behavior stems from a much deeper unconscious mind based on our previous experiences. He used three key methods of reaching those unconscious thoughts: dream interpretation, free association and tongue slipping. 4. Provide an example of how this psychological perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. I firmly believe that in many instances, we act on our instincts, which stem from our lived experiences. We often use what we have learned before to help us make our decisions. For example, I almost always say “yes” when someone asks me to do something, because I've always been a people pleaser. Sometimes, after I say “yes,” I think to myself, “I don't want to do that. Why did I say “yes”? 1
5. Identify a theorist, summarize their theory, and explain the aspects of that theory that relate to the social perspective . Spence's Structural-Functional theory is also known as Functionalism. It states that just as various parts of a body work together to keep the body functioning, various parts of a society work together to keep the society functioning as well. According to Hebert, society is seen as a structure comprised of interconnected parts intended to meet the social and biological needs of every individual within that particular society. In this theory it is stated that it may it be in terms of government, education, family, healthcare, religion, and economy. 6. Provide an example of how this social perspective of life-span development applies to your lived experience. I believe that we, as humans, need other humans in order to survive. I believe that there are certain people that are meant for specific roles which they will perform well to help others. I believe that societies exist because of government, schools, family, healthcare, religion and economy. We wouldn't likely survive without all of these in place. 7. Describe why analyzing the life span from a combined biological, psychological, and social perspective is important. Throughout life, individuals encounter a variety of experiences that have an impact on their development. I believe that to help another individual, one needs to understand what experiences that person has gone through. I think that the idea of arrested development, induced by trauma or alcohol/drug use is important to remember. 2
