Cognitive Disorders Case Study Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to explore the symptoms, etiology, cultural implications, and possible treatment options for neurocognitive disorders Case Study-Pascal Bridget brought her father, Pascal, in to see you for an evaluation because of the family’s concerns over Pascal’s functioning. Over the past few months Pascal has lost interest in many of the things that he used to enjoy and often spends his days watching hours of television. Bridget recently discovered that Pascal has not been paying his bills. It took Bridget hours to understand how Pascal has been managing the household finances and checkbook. Bridget reported Pascal has always kept very busy, and even though he still has a calendar full of appointments and plans, he often misses meetings and social engagements. Bridget expressed concern over the fact that Pasqual will sometimes call her by her brother’s name before correcting himself. Pascal states there is nothing wrong and is angry Bridget “won’t mind her own business.” He states Bridget and her brother just want to get their hands-on Pascal’s money. He reports they’ve even been stealing or hiding his electronics whenever they come to the house. He angrily states “I know it’s them, I can’t find my phone or tablet half the time, they either take them or hide them from me!” He only agreed to come in for the evaluation to get them to leave him alone. You plan to refer Pascal for a full neuropsychological evaluation, but in the meantime, you suspect that he may be suffering from a neurocognitive disorder. 1. What symptoms is Pascal exhibiting that would lead you to the preliminary conclusion that he is suffering from a neurocognitive disorder? Which neurocognitive disorder would you diagnose him with? Align his symptoms to the DSM 5 criteria for the disorder. 2. What other questions would you ask to help determine the existence of other symptoms and to begin to determine the cause of the impairment? 3. What are some of the cultural or gender concerns that may impact Pascal’s experience? 4. What are the next steps you would recommend to Bridget and Pascal in order to obtain appropriate treatment? 5. How can the family and treatment team work with Pascal’s resistance to considering something is wrong? Your assignment should use at least three peer reviewed sources (one can be your textbook).
