Instagram: @gestrada_cbu Days: Tues. & Thur. Time: 2-3:30pm Location: HSCC, M262 Office Hours: T/Th, 12-2pm Wed, 9:00am-2:00pm “A survey of the books of the Old Testament and their theological contribution to the overall storyline of the Bible. Attention is also given to the historical and cultural context of ancient Israel.” Identify and describe the historical backgrounds (author, recipients, date, location, purpose, genre, structure, themes), major critical issues, and distinct themes/emphases of the Old Testament books. Demonstrate familiarity with major passages and episodes, significant characters, and key events in the Old Testament. Interpret biblical passages from their historical setting and apply OT concepts to their contemporary context. Read the Old Testament on their own and understand its passages in light of their historical and literary context, and grow in their comprehension of the plotline of the Scriptures. This course seeks to develop each student’s understanding of the history, literature, and theology of the Old Testament. It seeks to do this by enabling the student to better: 1. 2. 3. 4. 1
REQUIRED TEXTBOOK COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Attendance and Participation. This is an interactive, learning environment. Therefore, each student is expected to attend every class session, have access to a physical Bible (no phones) and participate in the in-class activities. There are two categories of participation: (1) Class Participation (Covenant Blessings Points); (2) Individual Participation. The class participation points earned may benefit the class corporately in several areas, but individual points will be deducted from students not participating and possible removal from the class with no credit for the day. However, students will be permitted 4 absences , upon the student’s 5th absence, the student will receive a final grade deduction along with additional assigned work. Students missing more than 5 absences should not expect to pass the course. Arriving late or leaving early will also affect student participation. If students miss 30 min or more of class instruction, they will be marked as absent and receive no credit for that day. Students are required to sign-in at the beginning of class on time and complete a review before class ends. The reviews will account for individual participation points. If the student is not present during the review, s/he will not receive credit for it (no make-ups). If a student completes a review after class, it will not be accepted. If a student is absent due to illness and the university requires the student to stay home, then an alternative assignment is available upon request to make-up for the points missed. Students with perfect attendance will receive an additional 3% to their overall grade. Participation will account for 200 pts. Participation fulfills C.O. #1-4. 2. Meet with the Professor. All students will schedule one in-person meeting with the professor through Calendly, or Blackboard. The meeting is 15 min and should be completed by March 31 . This assignment will account for 25 pts . Encountering the Old Testament: A Christian Survey. 3rd Edition. Author: Bill Arnold and Bryan Beyer ISBN 978-0801049538 Publisher: Baker Academic Not required to bring to class. ESV Study Bible Publisher: Crossway Required to bring to class 2
COURSE REQUIREMENTS 3. Quizzes. Typically each Thursday a quiz will be opened at the end of class that will cover textbook reading from the week. The quizzes will be based on the assigned reading and will be due Saturday at 8 am ( 100 pts total). Quizzes will accomplish C.O. #1-2. 4. Exams. There will be three exams, and the material for each exam will be taken from the textbook readings and the class lectures. All exams will consist of a multiple-choice section that derives from the textbook reading and a written section based on class lectures. Students will not be given a make-up exam unless approved before the scheduled time; otherwise, an incomplete or late exam will receive a zero. The first exam is due Saturday, Feb.19 at 8 am ( 225 pts) . The second exam will be due Saturday, Apr.2 at 8 am (250 pts) . The final exam is scheduled by the University during Apr.21-29 . The final exam will consist of two sections. The first section consists of online questions that cover the Writings section. The second section consists of an essay in which the student will present the storyline of the Old Testament. The exams collectively will count as 625 pts of the final grade. Exams fulfill C.O. #1-4. 3 200 Participation Meet the Prof. Quizzes Exam 2 Exam 1 Final Course Requirements Total 200 25 100 225 250 200 1000 Daily March 31 Weekly Sat, 8 am Feb.19 (Sat), 8am Apr.2 (Sat), 8am Apr.21-29 Points Due Dates
1. Service Opportunities: Students who participate in the following faith community- building service projects listed below will receive additional points toward their grade. i. Support ISP through the Blood Drive ii. Write a Psalm. 2. Pre/Post Assessments: The pre- and post- assessments will be administered at the beginning and conclusion of each unit. They will not affect the student’s grade in any way. Their purpose is designed to function for instructional and personal analysis. The instructor uses the data to evaluate the effectiveness of the incorporated teaching methods, and the student may use the data to observe his/her personal comprehension and mastery of the course material. 3. Rooted (optional): Due to the nature of the course, the amount of time allotted for questions in class is limited. Therefore, if students wish to further expand their theological understanding or need prayer, I will meet with students at a designated time in person or online. Additionally, here are some events for further study. i. “Theolatté,” Topic: The Existence of God (2/15/22) ii. “Theolatté,” Topic: The Existence of E.T. (3/15/22) iii. OT Groups, Topic: Tough Questions (Feb.1-Mar.8) iv. D-Group, Topic: Being Christian (TBA) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION COURSE POLICIES Absences are excused only for extenuating circumstances such as hospitalization, military service, funeral of a close family member, or an obligatory CBU activity. Documentation is necessary for an absence to be excused. All other absences (including undocumented extenuating circumstances) are considered unexcused. If a student misses class, it is that student's responsibility (not the professor's) to get any notes or assignments that were missed due to the absence. Course materials are available online through Blackboard. Tardiness and absences cause a student to miss the quiz for that day and there is no make-up quiz offered. Arriving to class only for the quiz is considered an absence and the student will not receive credit. Repeated tardiness will result in a grade deduction at the professor’s discretion. The School of Christian Ministries (by which CST110 is offered) has an attendance policy pertaining to any Christian Studies course at CBU: Any student in a CST course who misses two weeks of class time (accumulated, not necessarily in succession) in a semester-length course (any combination of excused/unexcused absences) risks automatic failure of the course. For this Tues. class, 4 absences is the maximum allowable. Upon the student’s 5th absence, the student will receive a grade deduction along with additional assigned work. Students missing more than 5 absences should not expect to pass the course. Attendance Policy: 4
