Poverty Assignment Bianca Matos Mental Health and Human Resources Department, Tarrant County College SOCW 2361-20002: Introduction to Social Work Professor Aditi Prabhakar, LMSW, MBA February 7, 2023
As stated, Ray suffers from schizophrenia and the diagnosis has significantly impacted his ability to sustain employment. Losing his job as a mailroom clerk due to his worsening symptoms, has caused Ray to lose his only source of income. His mother and sister live by and they help him with what they can, as they can only do so much since they are struggling financially themselves. This leaves Ray with no stable financial help. Connecting Ray with accessible mental health services is crucial for managing his schizophrenia and improving his overall well being. Another factor that may be able to help Ray is assigning him a Case Worker that could help him navigate available resources. Such as, public assistance programs and housing services. Ray cna potentially internalize societal stigma surrounding his mental illness, leading him to compare himself to others and feel shameful of himself. This stigma can continue to decline his motivation to seek help or pursue looking for employment, so it is important that he reaches out so he could get the help he needs. If I were to work with Ray, I would establish trust and build a trusting relationship with him so that his unique needs are understood. I would help him develop an action plan for his immediate needs, as well as encourage him to advocate for himself and the needs he needs. Local community mental health centers offer a variety of services like therapy and medication management, and some have programs designed for those with schizophrenia like Ray. Ray could also qualify for public assistance programs like SSI, which can provide financial support and access to other resources. Like public assistance programs, Vocational assistance programs specialize in assisting individuals like Ray, with mental health conditions, in finding and maintaining employment through various accommodations.
