Aranda 1 Brenda Aranda Professor Hutch Asian American Studies 347 22 September 2023 Paper Proposal For my research paper I plan to do it on the L.A. Riots of 1992. My main focus is going to be on Korea Town and how the Korean community was targeted during the riots. My Research question is How the Rodney King beating/case become the catalyst for the attacks on the Korean Community during the L.A. Riots? As in how did something that happened in the San Fernando Valley become the straw that broke the camel’s back and unleashed such rage upon the Korean community in Los Angeles. This is more or less the direction I was planning on going, although I do feel like I need help with either coming up with a better research question or the wording of my research question as I feel it may not be a solid research question. But I plan to see how the Korean community was viewed before the riots and after the riots in the eyes of society. I also want to see if there was an influx for Korean immigrants during this time or if there were any Bills or Acts concerning Korean immigrants/Americans. I also want to know what happened after the riots, were there any long-lasting effects on the Korean community. A potential issue that I want to analyze is whether the African American community already had a preexisting issue with Korean community and used the Rodney King beating situation as a catalyst for the horrors that befell Korea Town. I’m also interested in analyzing a mental health aspect as there might be some sort of trauma that is felt behind and if there is what kind of disorders if any were developed due to the L.A. riots. I also want to see if the gulf war might have played some part in the creating the perfect the storm that was the L.A. Riots.
