Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? People's habits are influenced by their culture and environment. This is especially true for their diet and exercise habits. When most people in a community value healthy eating and physical activity, those who do not may be treated differently, even if they have similar physical activity levels. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? The inhabitants of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica follow a culture of living at a leisurely pace and avoiding stress. They also emphasize maintaining close-knit families and building strong connections with their neighbors to promote the community's overall well-being. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. The Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica has been noted for its ability to promote longer life expectancy compared to other regions. This can be attributed to the natural beauty of the environment and its sustenance. The lack of access to fast and heavily processed foods also contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, the locals tend to walk everywhere, which is an additional factor for longevity. Access to public healthcare that is paid for allows even the poorest individuals to receive care, which is another significant contributor to their well- being. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased
longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life. Social norms in my life move rather quickly. It's common to grab a quick meal, even if it's unhealthy, which can negatively impact your overall well-being. In the United States, holding someone's gaze for too long is generally considered impolite, as it may make them uncomfortable. However, for some people, this is how they connect with others on a deeper level, while for others, it can make them feel uneasy. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. I tend to engage in social interaction through technological means, especially over the last three years, due to the impact of the pandemic on how I interact with my peers. This, in turn, has altered how individuals interact with their peers and family. My daily activities are significantly affected by the physical environment in which I reside, particularly during the summer months. The temperature can rise to almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and drop to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit at night, necessitating careful planning of my activities and limiting the types of activities that can be undertaken. Regrettably, my social interactions are subject to seasonal variation. Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war. The foremost issue associated with war is economics. The economies of the nations involved in wars vary. While one country may stand to gain economically, the losing nation would suffer from economic downfall due to the tragedies of war. Another significant issue is religion. Many past wars have been initiated due to substantial differences in the beliefs and practices of different faiths. Those at war may even resort to destroying religious artifacts that are held in high regard to try and shake the beliefs of others. It is important to note that these issues are not exclusive, and numerous other factors can initiate a conflict. However, economic and religious aspects are often the most prevalent and influential. Therefore, it is essential to understand the nature of these issues and their potential impact on the global community, particularly in a business or academic setting.
Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education. Education is a domain that intersects with two major social science issues, namely racism and poverty. Research has revealed that areas with higher rates of poverty are typically occupied by minority populations, which is indicative of systemic racism and the unconscious biases that may exist among educators and other stakeholders. This creates a cycle that perpetuates poverty and racial inequality, as the two issues are interdependent. Therefore, improving one issue requires addressing the other and vice versa. Module One Question 8 Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course? This course will examine five crucial social institutions: Religion, Education, Government, Family, and Economy. Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. The article on India covers all five major social institutions: family, religion, government, economy, and education. Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India. The family institution is one of India's five fundamental social institutions, wielding significant influence over the Indian social fabric. The authority within families rests with the Elders, while traditional social norms dictate that the entire family resides under one roof. However, contemporary trends indicate that some families are transitioning from the traditional family dynamic, opting for a more modern lifestyle with only their spouse and children. Families increasingly embrace marrying for love rather than adhering to conventional family obligations.
