Understanding the individual client’s problems and needs in the broader social context iii. The division between micro- and macro- social work practice II. Define and describe Maurice Moreau’s five goals that guide structural social work practice from the Moreau journal article (1-2 pages) Maurice Moreau, in his work on structural social work, outlines five goals that guide practitioners in addressing not only individual issues but also the broader social structures that contribute to social problems. These goals are: 1. Consciousness-Raising – This goal involves increasing the awareness both social workers and clients about how social structures contribute to individual and collective problems. The aim is to help clients understand the systemic nature of their issues rather than viewing them as personal failures. 2. Resources Redistribution- Moreau emphasizes the importance of working towards a more equitable distribution of resources. This goal seeks to challenge and change the economic and social policies that led to unequal resource allocation, thereby addressing issues of poverty and social inequality. 3. Empowerment in structural social work means enhancing the capacity of individuals and communities to take control of their own lives. This involves supporting clients to develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to advocate for themselves and to participate actively in decision-making processes that affect them.
4. Social Transformation- This goal is about fostering change at the societal level to create a more just and equitable social order. Structural social workers are encouraged to engage in activism and policy work to challenge oppressive systems and to promote systemic change. 5. Solidarity-Moreau calls for social workers to stand in solidarity with oppressed groups. This means aligning with those who are marginalized and working alongside them in the struggle for social justice, rather than acting as experts who impose solutions from above. These goals are interrelated and collectively aim to transform not just the lives of individuals,, but also the societal structures that perpetuate inequality and injustice. Structural social work practice, as guided by Moreau’s goals, in an approach that seeks to address the root causes of social issues rather than just their symptoms
