Week 6 Assignment - Reflective Journal 3 O ne way in which Native American beliefs and traditions might make cultural assimilation challenging or undesirable is within their responsibilities. Per the textbook, being able to maintain their commitments to their tribe and Indian identity can be challenging (1). Add to that assimilating to other cultures and that would make the task of assimilating challenging and undesirable. Per the textbook the marriage rates outside of their group and culture is very high (1). That is mainly because of the small population available. Doing so forces native Americans into assimilation with groups that have different commitments and slowly takes the family lineage away from the Indian identity. One way in which Native American beliefs and traditions might help individuals maintain their cultural identity even if they assimilate in other ways is through history conservation. As I mentioned above the customs and culture of native Americans may be watered down as the population becomes smaller and they are forced to assimilate further. This can work both ways as non-natives can assimilate into the native American culture and help preserve that rich history. Their beliefs and traditions can be passed down for generations and children must be thought from an early age how important their culture and beliefs are. This will help individual maintain their cultural identity if they choose to assimilate. Choose partners that will honor and respect their culture and identity as they assimilate.
