Unconscious Bias and Social Justice The idea of personal responses are to engage in thoughtful internal dialogue about the idea of global issues and education. You should attempt, in your understanding of the readings to get “underneath” what you read in order to understand the social, political, and cultural underpinnings of the issues. Reading critically involves more than understanding the words or liking or disliking the texts; critical reading requires reflection. 1. What is the key idea or point in this section? 2. How do the videos and outside reading relate to the main point? The key point in this section is the importance of social justice and the implication of unconscious bias and its affects on social justice in education. Social justice is “justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society”. It is defined as “the fair treatment and equitable status of all individuals and social groups within a state or society. It refers to social, political, and economic institutions, laws, or policies that collectively afford such fairness and equity. It includes respect for the rights of minorities and equitable distribution of resources among members of a community”. It is the justice and fairness in our society- in our homes, in our businesses, and in our education and academic institutions. Unconscious bias is “unconscious favoritism toward or prejudice against people of a particular ethnicity, gender, background, or social group that influences one's actions or perceptions”. It is a belief, association, assumption, or attitude in one’s subconscious about another. Unconscious bias is not controlled, and people may not be aware that they have it. It may also contradict conscious beliefs or values. Another word for this is implicit bias. Unconscious bias, or implicit bias, usually leads to unfair treatment of an individual or group of people over another. The videos and readings relate to this topic as they expand on the benefits of and necessity of social justice. In the video, What Does Social Justice Mean to YOU?, the former UN secretary general states that, “Social justice should include equal access to opportunity”. The video, scholars explain that social justice is for the people and it is what is best for society. In this video, the UN high commissioner for human rights, Navanethem Pillay, states, ”Social justice means a life determined on human rights and equality”. The video explains that we need social justice in order to have peace and stability. In order to reach social justice in a society, we must first understand our unconscious, or implicit, biases. In the video, What is Unconscious Bias, unconscious bias is explained as our, “unintended people preferences that are formed by socialization, our personal experiences, and the representations of different people in the media”. It explains that “these experiences are social filters with which we make assessments and judgments of people around us”. Understanding how our bias affects how we view others is the first step to social justice, and allows us to reflect on how our thoughts of others make us see and feel about diversity and inclusion in our communities. In the text, Opening Eyes onto Inclusion and Diversity, it is discussed that, “recognizing culture as something that everyone has, we start to unpack our own attitudes to culture and multicultural education. We engage in critical self-reflection so we can understand ourselves to better position us to understand others”. It explains that better understanding
others is the best way to disassociate biases and prejudices that we may have in order to see other for the people that they are, and not the stereotypes that we may have.
