Keleen Howell Professor Jacob-Almeida SOC 120 30 August 2023 Trot Part 1 The topic that I chose was crime. The reason I chose that topic was I am very interested in criminal justice and how things get handled when police officers break the law, and the investigations that take place following. The title of the article I chose is "Complaints about police officers: A comparison among types and agencies" by John Dugan and Daniel Breda. The second article I chose is "Citizen Complaints Against the Police: An Eight City Examination." by William Terrill and Jason R. Ingram. The link for the first article is https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/0047235291900506. The link for the second article is https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1098611115613320. The question that the research answers is what type of officer gets the most complaints, which is younger officers who have less experience on the police force, and that the most common type of civilian complaint is verbal conduct. Both articles discuss how police officers' biggest complaint is verbal conduct. When reading both blogs, I was surprised to find out that verbal misconduct is the biggest complaint. I used to think the biggest complaint by civilians was the use of force complaints. The articles made me realize that most police interactions are primarily verbal, whether a traffic stop or telling somebody to leave the area.
