Report
The Black Lives Matter movement has been highly effective over the past decade. Black Lives Matter aimed to shed light on police brutality, which it has done. The Black Lives Matter normalized the filming of Black pain at the hands of individuals sworn to treat everyone equally. Black Lives Matter shifted public opinion. For example, a 2017 PEW study found that 54% of white people viewed officer-involved shootings involving Black people to be signs of a broader problem. (Ray, 2022) The fact that over 50% of white people think that policing has racial issues is a huge achievement. This attitudinal shift created a policy window for local, state, and federal changes to policing and the criminal justice system.      “When protest happens, it changes the way people talk,” said author  Zackary Dunivin. “Black Lives Matter got people to pay attention when people were not paying attention. The protests got people to care, and that has changed the way people are talking and thinking about race. (Eckart, 2022) Protesting, rallies, and riots were a big part of the Black Lives Matter movement. They were the main strategies that individuals used to inform the community of the injustice African American people were experiencing. (Eckart, 2022) Protesting was mostly held where young Black men were killed, where injustices were held. The members of the Black Lives Matter movement protest in the cities where an African American person was killed due inequality. The Black Lives Matter movement leaders organized getting the supplies they needed for the protest, t-shirts, mask, waters, bullhorns etc. As Zaria McClinton discussed in “Tension is High, Trust is low” discusses how often protest and rallies with The Black Lives Matter movement were often portrayed as violent and dangerous whereas, there was little to no violence or damage in the protest she attended. (Renaud, 16) The Black Lives Matter built solidarity because people were grieving the loss of their loved ones. Community is central to thriving for African Americans; historically, the Black community has
banded together to battle social justice issues such as poverty, racism, inadequate healthcare, state sponsored violence, and detrimental living conditions. Other African Americans can see the injustices and felt the pain of their fellow African Americans. The cities that helped protest took a loss when protest turned into riots and damage was done to stores, homes and communities. The protester risked their lives by going against the police and people against the Black Lives Matter movement.   career in social work is one of empathy. It is easy to understand that many social workers stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, as many of the marginalized groups they serve are the same groups affected by racial inequity. Since the beginning of the movement for equality and equity among all. After the Grand Jury decided not to indict the officers charged with the death of Michael Brown in 2014, the  National Association of Social Work (NASW) called for “the Justice Department to review the Ferguson incident to determine whether civil rights violations charges should be filed.” (Anonymous, 2022) After the death of George Floyd in 2020, over 16 NASW chapters nationwide made it clear how the social work community was to act in the aftermath.   The response of social workers and social work organizations nationwide is unified— there is a systemic failure in the relationship between Black individuals and law enforcement. (Anonymous, 2022) Social workers play a crucial part by impacting policy change, advocating for underrepresented communities, and eliminating disparity. They involve themselves in activities that bring about reform or acting as support systems for those suffering the most from this unrest. ( Sosa, L. V, 2020) Social workers are a valuable part of the Black Lives Matter movement and can help bring about the change this country needs.
