The Influence of Gender: Career Counseling Initial Session and Summary (Obj. 4.3) 2
The Influence of Gender: Career Counseling Initial Session and Summary (Obj. 4.3) The theory I used or attempted to use is the Hollands theory. I wanted to understand what her values were and how they were attached to the reason of the job or career she chose. I believe I was helpful in letter her speak on how she would improve her current career but could have gone into more detail when I found out her values and what she believes overall. I can honestly say that I did not think about gender at all. The things that she spoke about was helping ang improving a system working with students is genderless unless you’re dealing with a specific person. Motherhood was something expressed during the time and it helped understand how much she loved her son and want to be their for him. She also looks at the kids or working in the school system similarly to how she cares for her son. Her desire to make things better for them gave me the opportunity to chance to provide opportunities that help the youth outside of the school system. Sometimes trying women are looked down on in a male dominated field. They must work extra hard to get ahead. The other issues being a single mother she would have to get jobs that does not interfere in her being able to care for her son. Going back to school came up during the session. Online is a option, but there are real challenges to it. We would learn in future sessions, but if her learning skills are in person, she would have challenges passing the classes.
