Part One As a teacher I have four main thing that I do to support and teach my young students about engaging in safe behaviors. 1. Reading different books to them on the topic of engaging in safe behaviors. During circle time I always make sure to carve out enough time to read them a book on safe behaviors. The overall themes of the books never change though the topics rotate out daily. Some of those topics being: how to properly act in a classroom, what to do if there is a fire and stranger danger. 2. Playing different songs and watching different videos on safe behaviors. During circle time I also carve out time to watch videos and sing songs on engaging in safe behaviors. The videos rotate daily but the song we sing is always the same which is called "The Rules of the Classroom" which main messages are following the classroom rules and being nice to your friends and teachers. 3. Modeling/Demonstrating. You as the teacher are making sure that you are modeling all the behaviors you want your students to be demonstrating and engaging in. 4. And finally the most important repetition. Making sure that you are going over all these things on a daily basis. Why, because that's how students retain and remember things. How they will start implementing all this into there daily routine. Part Two
Along with that there are also things I do as a teacher to teach my students about how to engage in public and with strangers. Personally I like to turn this into a whole lesson or sometimes even a 2 part or mini lesson. Usually I will start with a PowerPoint. Going over what a stranger is. Asking the kids if they know what one is. Having discussions about it. Throughout the PowerPoint we will watch videos and listen to different songs about being safe and acting appropriately around strangers. In this lesson is a mini lesson about engaging in public safety. For this we usually read a book about public safety. Once done reading we usually have a small discussion regarding questions and what we learned. References Gupta, MD. () Nemours Healthy Kids.
