● What justification from what we have covered so far in the course could we use to support a proposal to pay family members for providing care? ○ Gary Kennedy said that older adults invest more in existing relationships rather than creating new ones. Additionally, social isolation and loneliness can take a serious toll on elders, psychologically and physically. I think family members providing care would be more beneficial for the older adults and their quality of life. ● Are there any valid reasons for prohibiting the hiring of family members to perform home care services? ○ One reason I could think of to prohibit it would be that close relationships can warrant excessive negative feelings, such as leading to unwarranted dependency, influencing negative health behaviors, and the fact that the negative effects are more profound. ● Do you support or oppose this practice? Please explain the reasons why you support or oppose this practice. ○ I think I support this practice because of the continued social relationship already formed rather than having to develop trust and develop new relationships with new people. Additionally, social partners are kinder to older adults, which I believe would help keep older adults from being subjected to ageism and other discrimination.
