SWK5527 E-JOURNAL WEEK 6 AVA MONTGOMERY Date: 2024-02-15 Total hours completed this week: 21 Agency/Site name: Road to Change MSW site supervisor: Ashley Moss LMSW Course: SWK 5527 Advanced Practicum Summary of experiences this week including client/project assignments completed this week: During the sixth week of practicum, the weekly intern continued therapy sessions with clients on her case load and completed intakes with new clients. Intern completed diagnosis and treatment plans and reviewed with the site director. Inten was able to discharge two clients after meeting their goals and it was a great feeling to know how I helped them to become their better self. The intern was able to research evidence-based interventions with clients that have been suffering with depression and low self-esteem. Intern was able to meet with director to review the strategies that she researched. The intern also conducted her regular group for anger management that takes place every Monday. This week clients were able to provide intern with a major event that took place in their life this week that made them angry. The intern did ask clients to describe coping skills that were utilized. Clients were able to inform interns in the interventions that were being discussed in group were working. Clients were able to complete a survey to inform the intern if the class was helpful in their everyday life. Intern utilized the PHQ-9 assessment with clients at intake daily. The intern completed biopsychosocial assessments on clients this week in session. Intern volunteered at a local food bank to help individuals complete food stamp applications and provide food boxes. Competency 1Utilize the principles of self- determination to allow people to make choices about their own lives. Advanced Human Rights and Social and Economic Justice Competency 3 Engage in Research-Informed Practice and Practice-Informed Research Competency 4 Share the date and length of this week's supervision: 02/14/2024 1 hour How have course discussions and materials been integrated in your practicum experience this week (provide two specific examples): I have incorporated practice seminar discussions and materials into this practicum by practicing Awareness and Boundaries. Intern utilizing critical self-reflection: The intern examines her biases and assumptions daily. I understand how my personal experiences and beliefs may influence my client's interactions. Interns utilize cultural humility by recognizing that clients are experts in their own culture. I do daily research to deepen my understanding of diverse cultural backgrounds. Daily in sessions with my clients, I set clear professional boundaries with clients. I do this by maintaining appropriate emotional distance, avoiding dual relationships, and respecting confidentiality. Daily, the intern explores my own values and how they align with ethical standards. I understand the impact of my values on client
interactions and decision-making. Identify Social Work Skills/Theory used this week (provide two specific examples): Daily Intern used active listening, paraphrasing, summarizing, eye contact, and empathy; however, I am using CBT therapy and motivational interviewing with my clients. Daily Intern empowers individuals and ensures their voices are heard. This week, the intern was able to assist the agency with completing food stamp applications for clients and making food boxes to fight food insecurity. The intern was able to meet with the housing authority to obtain an application for the office and speak to the staff about their updated process for emergency housing. Intern advocated and collaborated with other professionals and the community by completing referrals and obtaining information on programs that could benefit the clients, such as classes the city pays for to send residents back to school. I interacted with many clients this week but didn't know how to advocate for themselves. The intern also utilized critical-thinking skills to evaluate clients. Intern worked with individuals or families needing assistance to find the best solution or resources. Discuss one application of the NASW Code of Ethics (values, ethical dilemmas, etc.) that was experienced this week: 6. Social Workers' Ethical Responsibilities to the Broader Society 6.01 Social Welfare Social workers should promote the general welfare of society, from local to global levels, and the development of people, their communities, and their environments. Weekly at my practicum, the intern advocates for living conditions conducive to fulfilling basic human needs and should promote social, economic, political, and cultural values and institutions that are compatible with realizing social justice. Every week, interns strive to meet human needs and empower people. Intern fights for social justice for the clients daily. Interns respect the inherent worth of all individuals, which is the Dignity and Worth of the Person. Intern recognize the significance of connections by understanding the importance of human relationships. Daily, the intern displays integrity by upholding honesty and ethical behavior. Intern is always competent and professional. The intern respects the client’s autonomy and avoids harming the client. No ethical dilemm were raised this week. The intern spoke to the mayor about the crisis affecting women in the Shreveport area who cannot work due to the childcare issues they face. How did you employ self-awareness, self-care and/or professionalism this week? (Provide a specific example): The intern practices self-awareness by constantly working on healing her own hurts so that she can be as healthy as possible for her clients. Intern establishes and adheres to healthy boundaries. Intern does things that encourage collaboration with other professionals to help the client. Intern collaborates with parents/guardians, teachers, school administrators, health professionals, community members and organizations. Intern also collaborates with social workers, counselors, psychiatrists, nurses and other hospital staff. Intern possesses empathy. Intern facilitates the process of clients’ finding their own answ The intern is always 15 minutes early. The intern is able to take a break and catch some fresh air whenever she needs to Daily, the intern practices breathing and mindfulness. The intern prays every morning before seeing clients. The intern was respectful to the staff by participating in all events with the agencies. Intern engaged my clients with honesty, candor, and integrity. The intern always writes in her self-reflective diary after every session with her clients. Competencies used this week: The intern has been utilizing Competency 7, which consisted of assessing Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities. Advance Human Rights and Social and Economic Justice Competency 3. Engage in Research-Informed Practice and Practice-Informed Research Competency 4 by reviewing interventions and comparing evidence-based research on similar interventions and biopsychosocial assessment. Engage in policy practice. Competency 5 Childcare must be addressed. Increasing parents’ childcare options by stabilizing operations for participating providers and encouragin more providers to participate in CCDF, ensuring timely and stable payments, and encouraging higher payment rates to cover the cost of care better.
