1. What do you think is the role of schools in today’s society? The role of schools today is to not only teach academic content, but to also teach prosocial values and service learning. Prosocial values are values such as responsibility, honesty, fairness, and civility. These values are an important role in school today because it allows us to instill good morals and practices in young students within a diverse environment. Service learning is a way to provide students with opportunities to deliver service to their community while engaging in the experiences. 2. Describe the characteristics of successful schools. Strong leadership: school has individuals who value education and see themselves as educational leaders High expectations: Teachers have high expectations of students, no matter their backgrounds Emphasis on basic skills: Teachers emphasize students achievement in the basic skills (reading, writing, math) Orderly environment: The environment is orderly, safe, and conductive to learning. Discipline problems are minimum, and teachers devote greater amount of time to teaching Evaluation of student learning: Learning of students is monitored closely, when difficulties occur appropriate remediation is provided. Sense of purpose: Those who teach and those who learn have a strong sense of purpose. From the principal to the students, everyone is guided by a vison of excellence. Sense of community: Teachers, administrators, and staff work well together. They are dedicated to creating an environment that promotes not only student learning but also their own professional growth and development. 3. Explain how community-based partnerships can help students learn. Community-based partnerships help students learn because they prevent social problems from hindering students’ learning. They also help with resources such as financial resources, supplies, and connections. Partnerships between communities and schools, individuals, civic organizations, or businesses select a school or are selected by a school to work together for the good of students. The ultimate goal of these projects is to provide students with better school experiences and to assist students at risk. Community partners  collaborate with teachers and school staff to align enrichment curriculum with that of core classroom content . It helps students learn through watching and assisting others.
