SOC-100 Short-Answer Quiz 4 Complete the quiz in a Word document. This is an open book quiz. The answer to each question must be 100-125 words. Topic 4 1. How do property, power, and prestige affect your personal social class? According to Marx’s conflict perspective in what social class do you belong and why? Property refers to one's ownership of resources, such as land or money. It can determine one's social class based on the value of their possessions. Those who own more valuable property are typically in higher social classes. Power can also affect one's social class, as having a high level of control or influence over others can elevate one's social standing. Powerful individuals are often associated with higher social classes. Prestige refers to the level of respect or admiration one receives from others. It can be influenced by factors such as education, occupation, and income. Those with high prestige are typically viewed as being in higher social classes. According to Marx's conflict perspective, social classes are based on the relationship between those who own the means of production (bourgeoisie) and those who do not (proletariat). The bourgeoisie exploit the proletariat by paying them less than the value their labor creates. Therefore, the social class in which one belongs depends on their relationship to the means of production. 2. From your perspective, what are the current shifts in global stratification? How does this affect the economic and political power of the United States? Currently I believe the biggest shift is Changes in political power and governance structures have significant implications for global stratification. The rise of populist and nationalist movements in various countries may influence the distribution of resources and opportunities globally. This affects the US directly because the political views for years have been governed predominantly by republicans with very old-school views, however we have seen a rise in the number of younger generations that vote against and have shifted the power to people who are more likely to represent the community and not people who are power hungry. Economically we are affected because of the way money is being spent. The priority of money spending always depends on the party we most lean on during that election year.
3. In the current economic situation in the United States what do you project will happen to social mobility and the American Dream? This is a very hard question in my opinion because the American Dream has a different life depending on where you came from and the struggles that you had to accomplish through life. The current economic situation in the United States, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, has had adverse effects on social mobility, which is the ability of individuals or families to move up or down the economic ladder. The pandemic has disproportionately affected low-income individuals and communities of color, exacerbating already existing inequalities. The widespread job losses and business closures have also had severe consequences for social mobility, as employment and financial stability are critical factors in upward social and economic mobility. The American Dream is something that is lost since people cant keep their small businesses or remain authentic to themselves. 4. Describe the Horatio Alger myth. Based on your own experience discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the myth for both men and women. The Horatio Alger myth is a popular belief in American culture that suggests with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude, anyone can achieve success and upward mobility. The myth is named after Horatio Alger, an American author who wrote popular novels in the late 19th century that featured young boys from low-income backgrounds who achieved success through hard work, honesty, and perseverance. The myth suggests that success is a result of individual effort and merit, and that anyone can achieve success if they are willing to work hard and persevere. For me since I am a woman, I would say that for men the myth is a lot mor applicable then it is for woman. Many times, woman is measured by their ability and their “role” in the world as a woman and are not judged based on what they can do or the efforts that they do put into the things that they do. Men typically have more opportunity.
