Jazlyn Berryhill 18 October 2020 Lareau- Chapter 1 Lareau- Chapter 2 Part 1 "Concerted Cultivation and the Accomplishment of Natural Growth" discussed children who occupy the middle and lower class and the tactics that play a role in them within their class group. Middle-class children are classified as concerted cultivation, whereas the lower class is ranked as a natural growth accomplishment. The chapter discussed the breakdown that middle- class children's development comes from discussions with their parents, and their organized duties are created and dictated by their parents. It was interesting to learn that children within this class develop a sense of entitlement and learn to see adults as equal because I've witnessed children who bear less respect for adults than I do—based on their lack of parental control. They lack social skills but acquire skills that can be useful in the real world when the time comes for work. Low-class children experience economic constraints because their families lack the finances to achieve most of their duties. Compared to middle-class children, the family is a big factor in low-class children since parents don't focus on concerted development for them. Parents used directions for the children instead of persuading, which is important because children should be allowed to choose, but they're still children who lack direction in a sense. These children have the chance at natural growth because they can have freedom and control over their emerging character. "Social Structure and Daily Life" emphasized the specific social context families take on in society. They are indirectly forced to bargain in social structures available within their communities and placed in their lives. From the teachers that teach within the school
systems to homes in the areas to the different races—these factors play a role in the social surrounding for families because they form the social patterns that they will interact and take part in based on the social systems. Part 2 Question: Is social structure the reason many individuals relocate or decide to change their lives due to more opportunities and chances being highlighted somewhere else in the world? In other words, is their social system better than the one an individual is currently living in?
