SOC*1100 Term Paper Proposal Sam Davies Student ID: 1239609 Contemporary Issue: Indigenous Rights & Reconciliation Theoretical Approach: Social Conflict Sociological Concepts: Agency, Colonialism, Ethnocentrism
a) 50-70 Words (1 mark) The social issue I will be discussing in my Term paper will be Indigenous rights and reconciliation, specifically within Canada. Canadian residents of European descent have long had relations to Canada dating back to the mid 17 th century, when European groups of majority French (N. Kelly & M. Trebilcock, 1998) and English (J. Reid, 1998) settlers journeyed to the land which is now known as Canada in search of resources, land, and potentially other people. In this paper this history of relations will be critically explored. b) 50-70 Words (1 mark) The theoretical Approach I will be exploring in the context of Indigenous rights and reconciliation is Social Conflict. Social Conflict is a theory which believes individuals and groups within society interact through means of competition rather than consensus, for the means of materials, resources, power, etc. Around this, inequality arises and social classes are formed (P. Main, 2023). This is very useful in discussing the relationship between Indigenous people and early Canadians, as while Europeans arrived with superior technology and intent to develop society, they began to encourage the assimilation and subjugation of Indigenous and First Nations people as a means of spreading European ideals of Christianity, culture, and lifestyle (Gov. of Canada, 2003). c) 150-190 words (3 marks) The three Sociological concepts I will apply to my issue are Agency, Colonialism, and Ethnocentrism. Agency refers to the capacity an individual has to think critically, have their own will, shape their fate, etc (C. Drew, 2023). In a general sense I will be referencing the impact of technology on this agency and how the relationship between Canada and the Indigenous people was directly affected by the suppression of Indigenous people’s agency and individuality. Colonialism is a social/political system in which one party in power generally referred to as an empire dominates another party, usually known as a colony (C. Drew, 2023). In this case, Canada is a directly colonized country, and it’s relation to the Indigenous people is directly colonist to colony. Lastly, Ethnocentrism the natural belief that your own culture is the “correct” culture, or the natural culture, or the one which should be the norm. Ethnocentric people would believe that their culture is superior, which early Canadians most certainly believed (C. Drew, 2023). This was the basis for Indigenous Assimilation and the spreading of Christian ideals to the Native Population.
