Discussion 7 Elder abuse may not attract as much attention as abuse in other groups due to societal perceptions. Ageism can contribute to overlooking or downplaying the significance of elder abuse, as there might be a tendency to dismiss the experiences of older individuals. Additionally, issues like isolation, communication barriers, and the normalization of age- related health concerns can make it challenging for elder abuse to be recognized and addressed promptly. Public awareness and advocacy efforts are crucial to bring attention to this often-hidden issue. The sociological theory of symbolic interactionism can provide insights into the persistence of elder abuse and guide towards a solution. This theory emphasizes the importance of symbols, language, and social interactions in shaping human behavior (Cohen, 2021). In the context of elder abuse, societal attitudes and stereotypes about aging can influence how individuals perceive and respond to the issue. To address elder abuse, a symbolic interactionist approach would involve challenging and changing societal attitudes towards older individuals. Promoting positive symbols and fostering better communication can contribute to a cultural shift that values and protects the well-being of the elderly.
