Labrada Page 2 WK2 Reflection - Reflect on Your Group Experience Kirst-Ashman differentiates teams from workgroups by stating in teams the members work collaboratively as a group for a mutual goal and mutual reward, while work groups strive for individual rewards within a group context. I was tasked with selecting which group I wanted to participate in with other classmates. I thought this process to be peculiar as in most organizations, even if you do not work internally with a team member, you are at least aware of their knowledge and background. (Kirst-Ashman, 2013) Creating a virtual group to complete an assignment, when none of the members know one another or the subject matter is difficult. I was the first to make initial contact with my group work by sending an email with my cell phone number to create a group message and further communicate regarding the date and time that worked best for us to discuss the assignment. Courtney did reach out and we spoke briefly via the telephone, but this would be the only personal interaction we would have. Tina's response to my email stated the dates and times she was not available and what time she typically went to bed, as in establishing boundaries from the beginning. Other members adapted to Tina's message regarding availability by stating when they were not available, yet no date or time for the group to communicate was established. No one seemed to want to be the leader, I felt a democratic approach would be more beneficial in maximizing member input and participation. (Kirst- Ashman, 2013, p. 80) We mostly communicated in a free form method via text messaging. (Kirst-Ashman, 2013) Our lack of leadership was apparent. We were not able to agree on a set time and date to discuss the assignment; therefore, I felt there were no roles, norms, relationships, integration, and interactions with my group work besides the minimal amount of input needed. I used my leadership skills by promoting group functioning, someone thought to send a picture message of their brief responses and another sent 3 picture messages of their responses. I thought collecting information in this manner is inefficient and created more work. I went ahead and sent my word document via email for everyone to review and suggested using Google Docs, TEAMS, or email to add, edit, and review my submission. Reyna had volunteered early on to put together everyone's submission to create our paper, she took Courtney's submission and combined Courtney's and my answers, and by taking this action we were able to complete the assignment. (Kirst-Ashman, 2013, p. 116) I felt there were plenty of costs and not enough rewards. The cost of not having a leader meant not all of us were held accountable for our work. The reward is for those that did not do the reading or research are coasting on the efforts of others. The cost of not finding a date and time to meet collaboratively created a defense mechanism for me for any future group assignments. I know I need to work with my interpersonal self to find my professional skills to set aside my feelings so that they do not hinder the interaction and cohesiveness of the group. (Kirst-Ashman, 2013) I hope by doing this, the reward is that the group can function more as a team and not as group work.
