1. As you read this week's chapter on social movements and view the theorist presentations, note what factors contribute to the success or failure of a social movement. What were some of the key themes you observed? The success of a social movement depends on several factors. One important factor is the existence of political opportunities, mobilization structures, and framing processes, which shape the emergence and direction of the movement. Another crucial factor is the movement's ability to disrupt the existing power structure and achieve concessions from those in power. Moreover, the motivation to address injustice and the perception of injustice as affecting a group rather than an individual can encourage people to join and remain in social movements. On the other hand, various factors can lead to the failure of a social movement, such as a lack of clear goals and organization, internal conflicts, repression by authorities, lack of public support, and an inability to maintain momentum over time. Additionally, the historical and cultural context in which a social movement arises can significantly affect its success or failure. 2. What social movement happening now do you support (or oppose)? Why? The Black Lives Matter movement is an important social movement to me. With the killing of George Floyd by police officers in May of 2020 and the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin. Along with many other cases that have occurred both before and after by police officers worldwide. Black Lives Matter is now a global human rights movement. It campaigns to end violence and systemic racism towards Black people and other people of color.
