2 SOCIAL MEDIA Social Media Social media platforms are one of the most influential places in the world. Any post an individual makes gives other individuals an idea of what kind of person the individual is. Monitoring your social media posts is very important as an educator. One post can change anyone’s life. In this scenario, Mr. Y. is a new teacher in his district. He has made friends with staff members. The staff members visit his social network page because of their friendships. On his social network page, Mr. Y. included a statement stating he is attracted to young girls. The statement Mr. Y. made is “the younger the better.” After seeing the statement, one of his colleagues reported it to the principal. In this paper, I will be discussing issues or concerns this scenario may raise, potential negative consequences, the six pillars of character he violated, and recommendations for any measures that will result in more positive outcomes. Mr. Y.’s statement will raise many issues and concerns. As an educator, a statement like such will draw attention to Mr. Y. and his intentions regarding his students. Another issue or concern that could arise is the safety of his students after a statement like such is made. Another issue or concern is the student-teacher relationship. People will be concerned about Mr. Y.’s relationship with his students. Another issue or concern that this scenario may raise is the possible breach of the professional and ethical code of conduct and ethics by Mr. Y. Lastly, another issue or concern that his statement might raise is the change of atmosphere in his class. There are several potential negative consequences for the teacher, students, and school community. One of those negative consequences is the teacher possibly losing his job and being labeled a sex offender. Another negative consequence is the teacher being arrested and charged. Another negative consequence for the teacher is losing his certification to teach. One negative consequence for the students is being uncomfortable around the teacher. Another consequence
3 SOCIAL MEDIA for the students is being in a stressful environment resulting from the statement made. One negative consequence for the school community is the attention it will draw to all the teachers in the community. Lastly, another negative consequence is the school community's humiliation due to Mr. Y.’s statement. There are six pillars of character. Mr. Y. violated all six of those pillars. The first pillar of character he violated is trustworthiness. The statement Mr. Y. made gives people the idea of not trusting him. The next pillar of character he violated is respect. Mr. Y.’s statement is disrespectful to his students, the staff, and the school community. Another pillar of character he violated is fairness. The statement made is not fair to young women and does not play by the rules. The next pillar of character he violated is responsibility. Mr. Y. did not think before he posted his statement. As an educator, he has to be responsible. Another pillar of character he violated is caring. Mr. Y.’s statement was not kind. The last pillar of character he violated is citizenship. His statement does not protect the safety of others. In the end, Mr. Y. violated all six of the pillars of character. Some actions and responses can happen to have a more positive outcome. One action is making sure the students have a line of communication to express how they feel. Making sure the students have access to proper counseling and help will have a positive outcome. Another action to take is offering Mr. Y. a program that can help him understand the severity of his statement. Another action is making sure every staff member in the school community understands why Mr. Y.’s statement is wrong and what can happen behind a statement made like Mr. Y.’s.
