Summative Assessment Kate Camara Santa Fe College EDF2085.0M1 Dr. Katherin Garland December 4, 2022
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT If you were to ask multiple people “what diversity in the United States means?” each person would tell you a different answer. This goes for the same if you would ask “what it means to be a diverse student?” but they all the answers you receive have a common theme in mind. They will each tell you it is extremely difficult to be a diverse student in the society we live in, as they have to fight just to receive the respect and education equality that non diverse students receive without trying. “Students just want to be accepted for who they are in the classroom” (Garland, 2022). While being in my field placement I have experienced a widely diverse classroom from gender, race, socioeconomic status and religion. This goes for most schools in Alachua County, as 41.6% of the population is another race besides white, 28.3% of the population is living in poverty. (Census Reporter, 2022) Many students have different cultural backgrounds and this is what helps make each student unique. It is important that as teachers we understand and support each of these cultures as it can explain many aspects of a student’s life. Gollnick and Chinn (2017) state, Culture defines who we are… It influences our knowledge, beliefs, and values.”( P.5) In my field placement understanding and knowing about each students culture was a big part of the classroom environment. My field placement teacher made sure to try and embrace each student’s culture throughout the classroom. A good of example of an assignment that can help embrace your student’s culture was our Digital Culture Collage, allowing everyone to see each of their peer’s different life experiences (Digital Culture Collage, 2023) There are many cultural factors that are present in K-12 classrooms. Some of these factors include race, socioeconomic status, gender, religion and many other. The two I believe are most prominent are race and gender. Race is one of the biggest factors into a students education they receive. “Because their educational experiences are generally of a lower quality
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT than those of most White students, a larger portions of students of color have fewer opportunities for higher education and well paying jobs” ( Gollnick & Chinn, p.57) Children of color are often not given the same opportunities both in and out of school causing them to not receive the same education as White children. In my field placement., the class only has one white child, the teacher does a great job making sure each child feels equal not matter the color of their skin. Gender is also a huge factor in a child’s education. Weather a student is a female or male they will tend to each have different learning ability’s. “Different types of classroom activities will engage boys and girls in the academic areas in which they are not performing proficiently.” (Gollnick & Chinn, p.105) Both Gender and race create many challenges for students. Not all are challenges, there are some benefits but very limited. The culture factor that most people can agree that holds the most challenges is race. The color of a student’s skin tone is huge determining factor in the education they will receive. In my field placement most of the students will face this discrimination in their educational careers. These Kindergarteners are yet to know what they are going to face to just to receive a fair education. Students of color have to fight just receive the same education as white children. Gender also holds many challenges for students. Gender equality, sexism, sexual abuse are just a few challenges to name that students will face challenges with. “Society has different expectations or gender rules for males and females and socializes children and young people to meet those expectations”(Gollnick & Chinn, p.132) As a educator your own cultural background can be both beneficial and challenging to your career. One challenge I may face as an educator is race. I am a white teacher so I will not be able to understand the struggles that students of color face in their educational careers. 40% of Alachua county’s population is non-white. ( U.S Census, 2022). With such a large portion of the
