SWP 538 (FALL 2023) - GROUP ASSIGNMENT Due Date: November 17 (Friday Class); November 20 (Monday Class) Purpose of the Assignment: The purpose of the assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom and develop a critical engagement with the concepts and stages of the quantitative research process. Assignment: Select any ONE research study from the two studies that are given to you. Assignment Steps: 1. Identify the following aspects of the study. When explicit in the article, cite using APA format; when implicit, provide a rationale for your answer, with source(s) to support your response. • The research issue and its relevance for social work practice • Major research question(s) explored • Research paradigm used or implied • Theoretical framework(s) used or implied • Hypotheses given or implied • Key concepts of the study • Variables explored, how the variables have been measured, and levels of measurement for each variable • Type of research design used • Recruitment of participants • Sampling strategy used • Data source (primary, secondary, or both) • Data collection method(s) used 2.How were research ethics addressed in the study? Were there research ethics issues that were not addressed and if so, how should these ethical issues have been considered? 3. Critically review the study and its findings in the context of an anti-oppression/social justice framework, by addressing the following questions: • What are its strengths? What are its limitations? • What are the implications of the findings? • How could this study be modified, while staying within the quantitative approach? - Provide a rationale for any modification(s) you have identified Guidelines: • 2000 words, double-spaced, 12 point font, 1-inch margin • Minimum 10 references; maximum 50% references from course readings. • Completed assignments should be submitted via D2L as specified by your instructor. Make sure you keep a copy of your assignment. All assignments must be double-spaced. • Current American Psychological Association (APA, 7th edition) standards regarding citations and references must be used. • Extension deadlines and late assignments will be handled as noted in the course outline. • Please familiarize yourself with the Academic Integrity Policy, especially with respect to matters of Academic Dishonesty; penalties will be applied if necessary. 1
