In your own words, describe the theory of intersectionality and why it is important to understanding the multiple social identities of an individual. The theory of intersectionality is the careful consideration of all the different levels of discrimination or oppression that overlap within an individual and thus that individuals may be subjected to a greater disadvantage because of their specific characteristics or social identities (Khan, 2015). It is important to understand the multiple different factors in which the different potentials areas of discrimination overlap and exist together within one individual. Describe an example from your own life where you have experienced overlapping identities and ensuing inequalities. If you haven’t experienced this, explore why you may not have. Far too many individuals including I have suffered from overlapping identities and ensuing inequalities as a result of other people’s ignorance and lack of compassion. For example, I am a Hispanic female with a very fair complexion and because of this, all to often I am confused for being White or Caucasian. There have also been several instances in which Hispanic or Latino people were impressed with my ability to speak “such good Spanish for a White person” as I have been told on several occasion. I kid you not this literally happens to me once a week. It is rather frustrating at first but eventually you become use to it, although by becoming use to this type of behavior it begs the questions as to whether I am encouraging this type of behavior or not? In the clip from What Would You Do , how did the reactions of people to the “bike thief” differ by his/her race/gender? In particular, in what ways do society’s stereotypes of young men differ by race? Specifically, individuals passing by were more concerned with the Black actor who was attempting to “steal” the bike. Almost immediately several individuals crowded the young black actor and became yelling and becoming defensive. One male individual even called the police immediately after he saw the Black adolescent attempting to steal the bike. In comparison, the White bike thief was not given nearly as much grief as the other actor. In fact, several of the individuals who were later questioned on camera said they gave the White male the benefit of the doubt and thought he had simply lost his key or worked for the park and was clearing the bike. There was only one couple who concerned themselves enough to put a stop to the young White male’s actions and when to get help when the host explained the experiment they were conducting. The female actress who was attempting to steal the bike had considerably less trouble than the two male actors. The very fist male to approach the female was a male passerby that even offered to help her and actually cut the chain off for her. More specifically the video mentioned that people equate beauty with being good
and thus “pretty” individuals are less likely to commit criminal actions, which quite honestly is just not true, criminals come in all shapes and sizes (Aman, 2011).
