One dilemma that I can see arising while working with a culturally diverse client is that we make a mistake and say the wrong thing at the wrong time or think that we know their religious beliefs because we heard it from some person in the office of the same “religious” culture. This has been an issue for so many, for so long. This is when we must take a moment to try and understand the client’s point of view. According to the National Organization for Human Services’ responsibility to the public and society standards 10-15 pretty much gives someone a road map of how to treat the people that we are serving. We must be knowledgeable about the different cultures that make up the community that we are assigned to. This way you better understand the clients that you are servicing. We must remember that there are people in this country who do not, nor will they ever live like the other half lives. As we learned in wk 2’s assignment, Biases and Privileges, we must not allow biases to interfere with our decision-making process. As stated by Cross, et. Al “Cultural competence is also frequently defined as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals and enable the system, agency, or those professionals to work effectively in cross-cultural situations.” (Cross et al., 1989, p. iv) According to the National Association of Social Workers’ the code of ethics that could be applied to both spiritual and socioeconomics would be 1.05: Cultural Competence. (c) Social workers should demonstrate awareness and cultural humility by engaging in critical self-reflection (understanding their own bias and engaging in self-correction), recognizing clients as experts of their own culture, committing to lifelong learning, and holding institutions accountable for advancing cultural humility. (NASW, n.d) To resolve ethical dilemmas sensitively and appropriately by following the ethical code from American Counseling Association (2014) A.4.b. Personal Values “Counselors are aware of and avoid imposing their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in areas in which they are at risk of imposing their values onto clients, especially when the counselor’s values are inconsistent with the client’s goals or are discriminatory in nature.” (ACA, 2014) In all honesty and fairness, I can not give credit to just this class for teaching me how to be a compassionate human. The credit goes to my mom, Rosa. My mother always taught me how to treat others as I wanted to be treated. I may not know everything I need to know about every living being’s beliefs, values, or morals. The only thing that I know is that my mother taught me to respect it. And as long as people remember that there should be no problems with being able to assist my clients in an effective and empathetic manner.
