Describe the impact of age on cultural competence in the health and human services field. The way that age impacts cultural competence is because older more seasoned professionals are set in their own beliefs and their own values. They do not want or accept change. As stated by Thomas and Leon (2021) “It is important to talk about issues related to culture because of the increased diversity of our society, our interconnectedness due to globalization, and to foster understanding. It is not what we have in common that creates tension and misunderstanding, but our differences.” Choose a generational group that is different from your own! The generational group that I chose to analyze is the Millennials. The reason that I chose this group is that I believe that generation x opened many doors for the next generation that they refuse to walk through. According to the Biliak and Frye (2019) research center, millennials outranked us when it comes to education, 39% of millennials gained bachelor’s degrees or higher compared to generation x’s 29%. But millennials are not in a hurry to start families or be independent. According to the same article, “ In 2018, 15% of Millennials (ages 25 to 37) were living in their parent’s home.” (Biliak and Frye, 2019) Most millennials, in my opinion, cannot cook or do not know how to do laundry. Some of the issues discussed by Biliak and Frye and Thomas and Leon show us that it is important to understand the differences in cultures so that we can better understand what they are going through and how we can help them. It is harder to help someone if you do not know what their specific needs are or what is needed to help them find the oomph, they need to become more independent. Describe one personal area of growth for working with different generational groups. The one personal growth area that I must try and work on while working with different generational groups is trying to adapt to their form of communication as well as trying to understand the different issues and events that affect their way of life. Discuss how you will work on this area of growth. The way that I started to work on trying to understand what millennials go through, I must remember that I come from a different time. I must remember and understand that things have changed. I must learn that the different cultural groups fought for their way of life and although I do not agree with all of it, I have to respect it and remember that my opinions do not matter when it comes to finding something that can help them get to a better space in their life and become productive citizens. I must remember that when I was their age and in the same predicament, I did not want anyone to judge my choices, so who am I to judge theirs? I remember how alone it felt to be on my own for the first time and not have much help in areas that my parents knew nothing of. If I can make it easy for one person and guide them in the right direction, then I can help them avoid some of the mistakes and heartache that I endured. References
