Workplace Violence Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site ( Workplace Violence, n.d. ). Workplace violence affects safety and the success of a business ( How to Prevent Workplace Violence in 12 Ways, 2020 ). The Unites States Department of Labor reported that in 2019 there was a total of 5,333 fatal workplace injuries that occurred in the United States with 761 of these cases being intentional (para1). This statistic proves that workplace violence has become a major problem throughout the United States. Employers have a duty to protect employees and themselves from violence, harassment, intimidation, and disruptive behavior ( Workplace Violence, n.d. ). There are many preventive strategies that jobs can adopt to protect employees. One of the best protections employers can offer is a zero-tolerance policy towards any workplace violence ( Workplace Violence, n.d. ). OSHA has suggested that implementing a well-written workplace violence prevention program combined with engineering, administrative, and training can reduce workplace incidents (para 5). Employers are responsible for informing employees of the policies, taking all reported incidents seriously, investigating all acts of violence and requesting assistance when appropriate ( DOL Workplace Violence Program, n.d ). Organizations should also provide Employee Assistance programs so employees under any stress can seek help ( DOL Workplace Violence Program, n.d ). Indicators of Workplace Violence Workplace violence can be presented in many different forms. You may see this in acts of assault, threats, intimidation or harassment behavior, physical intimidation or harassment and psychological intimidation or harassment ( Violence in the Workplace, n.d ). Assault in the workplace can be physical or verbal attacks on someone, resulting in bodily or emotional injury,
pain, or distress ( Violence in the Workplace, n.d ). Threats can be written or verbal gestures conveying intent of physical harm to persons or property ( Violence in the Workplace, n.d ). Intimidation is threats or other conduct that can lead to hostile work environments, impede operations, or frighten others ( Violence in the Workplace, n.d ). Physical intimidation can include blocking movement, holding, grabbing, following, touching or any other inappropriate physical contact. Finally, psychological intimidation can be making malicious, rude, derogatory, disrespectful, insubordinate, disparaging, false, obnoxious, or abusive statements with intent to hurt the reputation of others ( Violence in the Workplace, n.d ). Is it necessary for companies to be aware of performance or conduct problems which can also be warning signs of potential trouble ( DOL Workplace Violence Program, n.d ). When looking for indicator's employers should pay attention to attendance problems, adverse impact on supervisor's time, decreased productivity, inconsistent work patterns, concentration problems, safety issues, poor health and hygiene, unusual or changed behavior, evidence of drugs and alcohol use, evidence of serious stress in personal life, excuses, or unshakeable depression ( DOL Workplace Violence Program, n.d ). The indicators listed above are all things employers can take into consideration to avoid workplace violence. The presence of these issues does not automatically mean workplace violence but does display potential warning signs which can help stop violence before it occurs. Policies to Prevent Workplace Violence All companies should consider implementing different policies to prevent violence in the workplace. During the hiring process we should complete background checks on individuals. This policy allows employers to identify if the considerable candidate has had any violent incidents in the past ( How to Prevent Workplace Violence in 12 Ways, 2020 ). Employers should also create violence, harassment and bullying prevention policies. These policies as stated earlier
