Topic 7 DQ 1 Discuss two to three challenges parents and children face in middle childhood. Compare these challenges for children with a disability or special need. What support systems are in place for families facing barriers to normal development? Good Evening Dr. Quade & Classmates, During middle childhood, kids struggle with challenges such as adjusting or acclimating to social spaces, maintaining peer relationships, and dealing with academic pressure (Santrock, 2021). Children with disabilities are often faced with increased challenges that are related to social integration and the need for specialized education (Santrock, 2021). Schools are commonly a part of the support system dynamic that is accessible for families, and one example of that is the use of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which are tailored to meet each child's needs and counseling services for emotional support (Santrock, 2021). These challenges further prove the tremendous and impactful role of collaborative partnerships between parents, teachers, counselors, and healthcare professionals to set the stage for an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for all children, ultimately building a positive developmental environment and setting the child up for success in the long run.
