Session 1: Tuesday, January 9 th , 6 pm eastern Session 2: TBA Session 3: TBA Session 4: Study session: TBA Preferred Method of Communication: email, I will respond within 48 hours COURSE DESCRIPTION This course builds on the social justice tradition and the policy analysis framework provided in SW 630 to prepare students to engage in the policy-making processes that impact and are impacted by the family and community service delivery system. Controversial issues within the child welfare, school social work, aging, and community development policy arenas are examined. Prerequisites: SW 630 or Advanced Standing status: STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Throughout this course, students will demonstrate the ability to articulate and write in a succinct, meaningful manner in all assignments. After completing this course, students will be able to: Articulate social work roles and values in formulating, changing, and evaluating social policies and agency policies that enhance the well-being of children and their families, the elderly and their families, and low-income communities and their constituents.
Describe an awareness of racism, sexism, classism and other discriminatory patterns that underlie the development of policies and delivery of services to children and their families, the elderly and their families, and low-income communities and their constituents. Synthesize the voices and values of key players and various stakeholders within the child welfare, public education, aging, and community development policy arenas at the state, local or agency level. Develop plans of action, alternate strategies, and budget proposals that influence state, local or agency policy on behalf of children and their families, the elderly and their families, children in public schools, and low-income communities and their diverse constituency base. COURSE FORMAT MSW courses are conducted in both online and hybrid formats. This course is fully online. All course materials will be posted online, written assignments will be submitted online, and all group assignments will be conducted online. The instructor will be available for consultation and will respond to student communications within two working days. Students are expected to be actively involved in the knowledge-building process and to participate fully in classwork session activities. Students are expected to stay up to date with readings and all other assigned activities as learning does not occur in isolation but rather within the context of practice and in consultation with others. This course will be taught with respect to the ties between practice, ethics, and behavior and emphasize application of material in a practice context. Students must be prepared to participate and apply the assigned readings and skills developed through learning activities. As your instructor, you can expect from me, a response within 48 hours to your emails, if not before. I will hold a virtual office hour each week and am available to meet via appointment as well. I will grade your assignments within two weeks of the submission date, providing feedback to you for areas of strength and improvement. I also will conduct four live Zoom classes throughout the semester that will supplement your learning experiences in the course, although these are optional for you to attend. I will also post weekly announcements, both written and recorded, to help you further understand, synthesize, and integrate the content we are learning as well as to keep you apprised of important class information. The format of this course provides students with the opportunity to develop a professional behavior skillset while working within small teams or interacting with the class as a whole during case applications and activities. This course requires foundational computer skills and proficiency in technical and digital information literacy. The following list, while not all encompassing, does identify the core skills our college would like our student to know and be effective/successful in their coursework activities.     Technical skills are the knowledge and expertise required to perform specific tasks and use specific tools and programs in our online course.    Using a keyboard, mouse and/or track pad  Sending and receiving email  Sending and receiving email with attachments. Final Exam = 15% Attendance and Participation Activities = 20% Due dates for assignments are listed in the Class Calendar. Unless otherwise noted, all assignments are due at 11:59pm ET on Sundays. Assignments must be turned in via Canvas. Submissions in formats other than the one specified by the instructor will not be accepted nor will assignments submitted via email . Students in the University of Kentucky College of Social Work have the right to appeal a course grade or academic integrity determination if the student’s academic performance was not the basis for the grade or if the instructor did not follow appropriate procedures, using the grade appeal procedure as outlined in the MSW Handbook. REQUIRED COURSE COMPONENTS 1. Policy-in-Action Assignments (30%) This is a three-part assignment (each worth 10%) designed to help you apply policy in action as well as prepare you for the signature assignment. In these three mini- assignments, you will identify your state and congressional legislators, select a current event that is connected to a policy you select, and locate an advocacy/community organization that advances or supports the work related to your policy topic. 2. Signature Assignment: Policy Analysis & Policy Brief Peer-Review (35%) For this assignment, you will engage in course learning through the lens of applied policy analysis, focusing on the historical, social, political, and economic viewpoints of social welfare policy analysis and practice. In addition to completing the analysis, you will create a policy brief that will be used to submit a 3 to 5-minute pitch to legislators that summarizes and advocates for the position of your social welfare policy. Your classmates will peer-review your pitch in order to provide quality feedback on the assignment. 3. Final Exam (15%) The final exam will consist of multiple-choice questions related to the course materials you will be reading, watching, and discussing through the semester.
