Lucy Nord COSC 222: 902 Final Week 3: Culture Often, people are so normalized within their own cultures that they do not seek to learn about others. Cultures are impacted by many characteristics such as location, traditions, beliefs, relationships, etc. We, as people, are so frequently focused on our own culture, that we forget to think about how different people elsewhere live. After reading this article by Horace Minor, I quickly came to a consensus on how strict this culture is. They are a North American group that lives on land between the Canadian Cree, the Yaqui, and Tarahumara of Mexico, and the Carib and Arawak of the Antilles. The people of this culture believe in the strong importance of physical appearance and bodily rituals. They perform different types of procedures to avoid illness and misfortune. They do this because they believe the human body is always flawed. An example of a cultural practice they partake in is bathing and excretory acts that are done only in the secrecy of the household shrine. This is where they are ritualized as part of the body rites. Miner overall describes the people of the North American tribe as people "devoted to economic pursuits". This contributes to the other practices people take part in. One of which is only done by men, and it includes scraping and lacerating the surface of the face with a sharp instrument. I would not want to be a part of this society as it goes against my religious beliefs. I also believe I could not be strong enough to handle the medical practices the people of this tribe have to participate in. As a woman, there is not much equality between them and men in this
society. I would not be able to show signs of being pregnant and when I give birth, I am not allowed to have friends and family around. One last thing that doesn't sit right with me, is if a woman has too small or too big of breasts, she can make a living by going to different villages and getting paid. I don't believe this is what I would want my life to look like. Overall, I am convinced by this article that women don't have much respect in this society. Citations Minor, Horace.
