Topic 3 DQ 1 (Obj. 3.5) Discuss some of the possible roles that a social worker has in the work setting. If a social worker is licensed, does this make him/her competent as a social worker? Provide insight from the readings this week as to how a social worker can maintain his/her professional competency. The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format. Some of the possible roles that a social worker has in the work setting are child protection agencies, family services agencies, hospital and mental health facilities, correctional institution, schools, health and community service centers, government agencies, and private practice (NASW, 2022). By being aware of different cultural backgrounds, social workers can maintain their professional competence. The knowledge of cultures allows social workers to understand their clients' backgrounds and therapeutic processes. By respecting confidentiality and supporting the emotional wellbeing of clients as well as maintaining their professional competency, a social worker can maintain their professional competence (NASW, 2022). According to the NASW (2022) a code of ethics is a commitment that sets expectations regarding the conduct of a professional when practicing within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Hi Alexa, I really enjoyed reading your post, it was informative, and I enjoyed hearing about your personal experience. You are right when you say that being a social worker with a license indicates a great deal of responsibility. Additionally, there are various times when Social Workers work from child protection agencies, child welfare agencies, family services agencies, hospitals and mental health care facilities, correctional institutions, schools, community service centers and health and medical centers, government agencies, as well as private practices. Social workers are therefore expected to follow the Code of Ethics, to be culturally sensitive and to maintain their ability to maintain their professional certification through maintaining confidentiality, supporting the emotional wellbeing of their clients, and maintaining their professional competence (NASW, 2022). In my personal experience, I am not aware of any social workers except for school social workers. My son’s school has a social worker which help him. As part of their job responsibilities, they work directly with school administration, students, and their families, providing them with support in many areas, including discipline, mental health intervention, crisis management, and support services. As well as working with schools to facilitate community involvement, social workers advocate for students' success and facilitate community involvement in schools (NASW, 2022).
