Introduction: The child welfare system incorporates organizations in each community to work together to strengthen families, and keep them together, while ensuring children are safe (How the Child Welfare System Works, n.d.). Most families become involved with the welfare system when a report of maltreatment, neglect or abuse is made. When that happens, a preliminary review is made to determine if child protective services (CPS) will become involved. A welfare worker is assigned by public authorities to address any allegations of child abuse or mistreatment (How the Child Welfare System Works, n.d.). If the report meets the conditions for agency involvement, the case is investigated by a social worker or special investigator. A caseworker reviews the information and begins finding the services that are available and needed for the children and family. Laws require caseworkers to guarantee children's safety, well-being, and long-term housing arrangements (Child protective services, n.d.). In Kansas, once an investigation is done, a risk assessment is done to determine the likelihood of future maltreatment (Child Protective Services, n.d.). A decision will be made as to whether the children will remain in the home, be placed with immediate family for kinship care or be placed in foster home care (How the Child Welfare System Works, n.d.). The way a case is handled will vary according to the development of state and local programs, but the process generally includes options for “prevention, kindship care, guardianship, family preservation, foster care, adoption, post adoption, and aging out of foster care” (Downs et al., 2009). Child Welfare and Family Services: Policies and Practice includes a case study about Amy, a 23-year-old mother, and her three young children, on page 241. This case shows the importance of family preservation services, through the child welfare system. The family includes Amy, Jimmy, the father to Jeremy, age 6 and Tiffany, age 4, and Ashley, Amy’s youngest
