Module Seven Question 1 Approach the clips you have seen from a social scientific perspective. What aspects of art therapy would interest a professional in each of the following fields? Psychology : Art therapy allows a person to express their emotions without saying them out loud. Anxiety, fear, depression, anger etc. can all be released through art therapy. Sociology: Art therapy has no guide, and people can use what they have seen and learned in their culture. It also can bring communities together by providing a safe space where people feel comfortable. Anthropology : Art is the perfect way for an anthropologist to see how society has changed and evolved. Art therapy can provide the direction in which culture is changing. Module Seven Question 2 Use the social science perspective to propose a few explanations as to why you might find graffiti in a society. Choose a social science principle (norms, roles, institutions, and beliefs and values) and describe how these might influence the appearance of graffiti in a society. Describe how the appearance of graffiti in a society might influence the people living there. Graffiti is a bold way for the artist to give their opinion, express their feelings, or even try and sway other people's thoughts on a topic. Traditionally graffiti was associated with gang culture and other young people who didn't conform with society. As most of us know now, that is not usually the case. Many times, the artists don't feel their voices are heard any other way. They will use this platform to share things like their political views or thoughts on what is going on in their community. Module Seven Question 3 Channel your thought process before taking this course and before adopting a social science perspective. Through what type of lens would you have viewed graffiti before taking this course? How would this have influenced how you thought about graffiti? How do these two reactions compare? Has your understanding of social science principles changed the way you perceive graffiti in society? If so, how? If your perspective on a different issue (other than graffiti) has changed after adopting the social science perspective, feel free to write about this issue instead!
Before taking this course, I would primarily look at graffiti through a sociological lens. It almost would make me look at the community/cultural as a whole. What is going on here that people don't care enough about their surroundings and paint random things all around? Now however, I look at it through more of a psychological lens. I realize it can be a release for some people and a type of therapy.
