Caitlin Guevara Professor Biraimah EDF 2085 October 10, 2023 Midterm Essay Question #2: Question 2: In what ways does social class shape schooling? In what ways does schooling shape social class? Ch. 3, p. 58 Social class plays a significant role in shaping schooling. While class is socially constructed by society and its institutions, it is a system that differentiates group access to economic, political, cultural, and social resources. It determines the stores we shop in, the restaurants we eat in, the jobs we have access to, and the schools we attend. A person of a higher social class is more likely to attend a school of higher prestige because they have the means to do so. While a person of lower social class is more likely to attend a school of lower prestige because they are unable to pay the cost to attend a higher prestige school. Social class also determines if a person can pursue a higher education with a college or university. Especially if they may have a lot of student debt by pursuing a higher education. As mentioned before, social class plays a role in every aspect of a person's life. One of those aspects is education. But education can also have a role in determining a person's social class. Someone who has the means to attend a higher institution for their education is more likely to receive a degree that will in turn give them a higher paying job with a higher salary, moving them up the bar of social class. While someone who is unable to attend a higher institution will not have those same opportunities, making them
fall lower into the social class. Social class can open doors of opportunity for many individuals, but for others it shuts those doors, and creates many hurdles that seem impossible to jump over.
