Creating Connections SOC 112 Introduction to Sociology Professor Elizabeth Ferns Chris Cogan 2/5/2023
Social Media has many impacts on our mental health. These can also be seen in how they affect our society. The first way it has an impact is through our cultural beliefs. A cultural belief that can be affected by social media is the economy. Social media has changed our way of advertising before social media you paid for advertising. Now every person is their own brand, and it is easier to connect to people (Quora, 2017). Since social media uses large groups of users there can be a subjective bias from information overload, cultural preferences, and shared values (Carrascosa et al., 2015). All these factors in our economic system and biases can affect social media users. This can be a bias that affects your personal brand based on your ethnicity, gender, or age. A good example of this is someone of Hispanic ethnicity may have problems selling their personal brand to someone who is Caucasian. The next aspect of sociology that this can affect is our social roles. One key role of social media is social media influencers. Social media influencers can direct individuals purchasing decisions, social media users purchase certain items or wear specific brands of clothes (Geyser, 2023) This can have a negative effect on social media users since they will feel swayed to purchase something that they may not need. A second social role would be a parent. Parents can be addicted to social media, which can negatively affect their relationships with their children. Social media addiction is affected by some social inequalities. Studies have shown that adolescents from lower incomes have higher rates of social media addiction. This can also be worse in schools where students have a larger greater wealth disparity (Collins, 2022). Young adults are most affected by social media addiction. 15% of people aged 23-38 admit to being addicted to social media ( Social Media Addiction Statistics: Who Is Addicted and What Are the Consequences? , 2023). Both display how social media affects mental health in both lower income children and young adults, social media is having a negative through addiction.
Finally, social media can affect our social conditions. Social media addiction has not been shown to affect performance in school; however, it does cause lower self-esteem and poorer health ( Effects of Social Networking Services on Academic. . . : Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care , n.d.). People with social media addiction show they get poor sleep and tend to have more mental health issues ( Social Media Addiction Statistics: Who Is Addicted and What Are the Consequences? , 2023). Lower self-esteem can impact our relationships with others, it can cause someone to be more reserved and less social. Getting poor sleep and having mental health issues can also affect how we interact with others.
