Module Seven Question 1 Approach the clips you have seen from a social scientific perspective. What aspects of art therapy would interest a professional in each of the following fields? Psychology :For a psychologist, art therapy can help a person reduce stress or relieve anxiety, it can also help a person express and deal with trauma. Sociology : A sociologist would be more interested in how art therapy connects people and can help bridge gaps in society or cultures. Anthropology : An anthropologist might find interest in looking at the images created to better understand how ones culture shapes their experiences with mental illness and treatment. Module Seven Question 2 Use the social science perspective to propose a few explanations as to why you might find graffiti in a society. Choose a social science principle (norms, roles, institutions, and beliefs and values) and describe how these might influence the appearance of graffiti in a society. Describe how the appearance of graffiti in a society might influence the people living there. You may find graffiti for many reasons, one being the beliefs and values of a person. Another could be for creative expression. A person may want to present their art for everyone to see, but in lacking the proper channels or patience may chose a form like this instead. Its hard to completely describe how it may affect people. some may be angered, others captivated. It just depends on where it was done and how the art was handled, for example, graffiti over a solider remembrance monument may be looked down on by most. However let's say it was one a vacant building next to the monument honoring it, then it may be received much better, it just depends on the art and placement. Module Seven Question 3 Channel your thought process before taking this course and before adopting a social science perspective. Through what type of lens would you have viewed graffiti before taking this course? How would this have influenced how you thought about graffiti? How do these two reactions compare? Has your understanding of social science principles changed the way you perceive graffiti in society? If so, how? If your perspective on a different issue (other than graffiti) has changed after adopting the social science perspective, feel free to write about this issue instead!
My opinion hasn't changed much on graffiti. I enjoy art and take part in contributing to my own drawings and other mediums quite frequently. I understood how it can be very therapeutic and even improve the atmosphere of a space if done right. To me a mural commissioned is just graffiti that was asked for to improve the feel of one's environment or pay tribute to something. Graffiti is no different, its a method of expression that some like and others don't.
