1. Provide a brief overview identifying how the social sciences previously examined your selected issue. Include which social science disciplines have previously been used to research or explain your issue. The social science issue that I am researching is the effects of emission producing facilities on low-income communities, specifically communities located near those facilities. This is a significant issue because many low-income families struggle to access quality environments and have resulted in an increased number of physical health complications. These complications consist of respiratory, cancer, and even digestive issues. Social norms are the attitudes and behaviors that are considered regular and acceptable, and which are expected of an individual, by society (MindEdge, 2023). Social Institutions are complex, established patterns of norms and behaviors that are governed by rules (MindEdge, 2023), particularly focusing on government and economy for this case. 2. Explain how the issue impacts the audience. In other words, how is the issue relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about the response to your question or the outcome of your investigation? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. A research investigation into this issue may offer more insight into how we develop low- income areas and give insight into how our everyday lives play a role in how others live. We consume many products on a daily basis and as the word implies, to consume is to devour, there are products we must use to live comfortably. However, this consumption leads to an increased level of garbage and waste. According to CNBC, early in the year 2021 we saw an increase in sales of consumer packaged goods by 9.4% compared to the previous year (Lucas, 2021). To keep up with the demand for more power and a place to put our garbage companies must acquire a location to build bigger energy producing plants but where do they tend to look to get more land for a cheaper price, well that is areas with low household incomes. I believe that the audience that would be most
interested in my issue would be those who live in areas where these facilities are located and city officials. It does seem that there is interest around the world already about this issue. The issue of waste disposal and emissions are not just an issue that is isolated to the United States, it has become a priority issue to the World Health Organization due to the adverse effects seen all over the world (Yu, et. al, 2018). 3. Describe the evidence you have to support your conclusions about the impact of the issue on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. The evidence I have to support my conclusions come from research conducted not only in the United States but also from China this demonstrates the reach of this issue. When we think of problems with our health and the health of our families we forget that there may be others who experience the same issues on the other side of the world. In the 1980’s North Carolina State Officials voted on the placement of a landfill in Warren County, North Carolina which resulted in protests from locals due to the landfill being placed in a low-income area and thus contaminating the soil with highly dangerous chemicals (Banzhaft, et. al., 2019). In 2015, the overall Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) production in China was approximately 185.64 million tons, which increased by 10.4% compared to that in 2014 (Yu, et. al, 2018). 4. Explain why this issue is important to you personally. In other words, why did you select this issue to investigate? This issue is very significant to me because when I was growing up this area is where I lived and I saw first hand the negative health impacts living near these facilities caused to my younger brother and my father. Now that I am older I hear similar stories from other people who have not hereditary health complications caused by the environments they live in. This is not the
