A transformation that the community has made over the past two decades is the phenomenon of the virtual community. What do you believe is the future of the virtual community? Will the traditional form(s) of the community continue to evolve and exist or will it eventually disappear? What are the implications for the social work profession and social workers? For online social networks to be considered as virtual communities they must involve a sense of common purpose and active participation by members. This can lead to strong interpersonal relationships between members and thus mirroring the affective bonds found in traditionally defined communities (Greene, 2017). The future of the virtual community is that we have clients that use social media and are active on online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. We must understand that these types of communities influence social development in both positive and negative ways. I don’t believe that traditional forms of the community will disappear but involve into a mixed modality of remote and face-to-face. An example of this would be when the pandemic has drove us to remote learning for school and others to work at home, but as we adjust to this, we see how it’s transforming and now some people have a mixed of online and in-person schooling and some occupations are moving some services to be virtual while going back to the work environment. There are also online self-groups, rehab groups for mental health practice. The young demographic of client would also benefit from virtual communities since they’re the age group that are mainly active online. Implications of virtual communities for the social work profession and social workers are that there are organizations such as the NASW that have adapted the value of virtual communities of practice and see it beneficial though there are problems such as ethical and practical considerations which social workers should have the basic awareness of dealing with these issues that come with virtual communities.
