2 Social Stratification Human’s lives are impacted by the kind of resources they have available and how they can utilise them to improve their wellbeing. However, different people have varying access to resources thus the difference in the way people exists. According to Funk (2016, p.4), Social stratification is the structured patterned differences in access to important resources. Some of the common dimensions of social stratifications are age, social class, gender, race, and ethnicity and they all impact the choices and experience of older persons. In Western world and developing societies, the older persons are usually considered incompetent and unable to complete most of their tasks (Wister, 2019). As a result, they are forced to retire early and have to depend on third parties to ensure that they can continue with their lives. Certain people have acknowledged this loophole thus the increase in the abuse of the elder persons. Family members and external forces have opted to get the power of attorney for the person they believe is incompetent and then misuse their funds in the belief that they cannot make their mind. In certain African traditions, the older people form the council of elders and are treated with much respect. They are expected to make all the major decisions within the community due to their vast experience and knowledge on the things that are yet to happen. In such communities, the council of elders have vast knowledge and will learn from their past thus being the right person to lead the community. They lead most of the gatherings and given an opportunity to express themselves. They are mostly respected by the rest of the community, and they can punish those who have gone against the community norms.
