DAAC 1319 Intro to AOD, Module 3 Janaiya Lomas September 25, 2021 1 I learned that women don't receive access to proper treatment and due to the stigmas surrounding substance abuse in women, women are shamed into hiding that they need help. Additionally, the treatment that is available to women are lacking and adequate help they can provide to women and are also very limited. Women who have children or are currently pregnant or at the most risk when dealing with a substance abuse disorder due to treatment centers not being able to accommodate them. Cost of treatment is another huge contributing factor because they can cause a lot of financial burden. When determining the proper in most effective way to treat women with a substance use disorder many factors can come into play. Taking into account the backgrounds, social, and economic viewpoints of a woman is one part in determining the best way to carry out treatment solutions. Women also respond to control substances a lot differently than what a man would on the biological and psychological spectrums. Due to a woman's body composition, it does not take long for in substance use disorder to become prominent. Smaller quantities of a controlled substance taken by women has the same effect a much larger dose would have on a male. The financial aspects which contribute to women not seeking treatment is due to gender inequalities in the workforce. This creates the economic barriers when it comes to treatment. Generally, women are more likely to be paid less than a male counterpart. Substance use disorders make it especially difficult for women in poverty to seek help. Pregnant women who suffer from substance abuse and are able to get treatment are then turned away due to there being no accommodations for their condition. They won't be able to receive the full effect of a treatment program because they have to also worry about the condition of their unborn baby. Women who have children are faced with a slightly different set of problems because they may not be able to find someone to look after their children while they are undergoing treatment.
DAAC 1319 Intro to AOD, Module 3 Janaiya Lomas September 25, 2021 2 There is also the fear of having Child Protective Services take their children away because of their substance use disorder. Monday you go even if a woman is able to come in and do treatment because she doesn't have children, not expecting, and doing well financially they still face cultural stigma. Substance use disorders are seen as shameful, and women are looked at as less than whereas a man will not experience nearly as much berating. Society views women as the caregivers and gives women feminine roles. They view substance use disorders in women with very little sympathy because in their eyes women are betraying their gender role. This causes the likelihood of a woman seeking help for substance use disorder to greatly be reduced. I think the stigma surrounding women with substance use disorders very sexist giving all of the reasons that support the stigma. As far as treatment goes women thrive more in the treatment setting that makes them feel safe. Staff need to be trained in gender specific treatment so that they are able to fulfill the primary needs for women suffering with a substance use disorder. Given that a woman's biopsychosocial uniqueness is different, specific treatment methods are needed. A more supportive approach to treating substance use is Oregon women is seen as more beneficial than a confrontational approach. Sources Doweiko, H. E., & Evans, A. L. (2019).
