Ferris, Kerry, and Jill Stein. The Real World . Available from: VitalSource Bookshelf, (8th Edition). W. W. Norton, 2022. 1. Explain how any two of the theories of deviance listed below could be used to understand Hanks’s deviant and criminal behavior. Make sure to briefly explain at least two major ideas associated with each theory and then explain how the theories apply to Hank’s behavior. The two theories of deviance which I believe could be used to understand Hank’s deviant and criminal behavior are Structural Strain Theory and Differential Association Theory. I believe that Structural Strain Theory is applicable because this theory is based on the belief that individuals may become strained as they are unable to meet the goals that society says they should be working towards and achieving. The text also states that innovative people may try to gain financial success through less acceptable means such as drug dealing. Hank may have been feeling overwhelmed as he was facing difficult obstacles; his mother was struggling and he was no longer receiving support from her, and was also raising himself at a young age. He may have come across the opportunity to make money by selling drugs, and in a difficult situation trying to fend for himself, he took the opportunity. When he moved in with his Aunt and Uncle he also may have been overwhelmed with his new living situation, which put further stress on him to maintain his good attendance at school and his above average grades. Secondly, I believe that Differential Association Theory is applicable because Hank was around his mother who was also involved with drugs. He also may have been associating with friends or other students who were taking part in doing and or selling drugs. While at one time Hank may have had a negative idea of drugs, as he was becoming immersed in a world of drugs, they became more normal and acceptable. Two ideas that this theory is based on include that we become deviant as we surround ourselves with others who are deviant, and that we may become deviant as we are exposed to deviance. Hank was exposed to drugs by his mother, and eventually must have been surrounded by other people who were participating in activities including drugs in order for him to gain access to the substances which he was selling. 2. Which theory do you think best explains how and why Hank is getting in trouble? Why? I believe that Structural Strain Theory best explains why Hank is getting in trouble because of the immense amount of stress he was put under during his mother’s struggle with opioid addiction. While he was an above average student, as he began to undergo the stress of supporting himself at a young age, seeing his mother struggle, and moving into his extended family’s home, he most likely became strained. As all of these changes were going on in Hank’s life, he no longer had the same foundation to continue to strive as a
young person and as a student. Hank was not able to cope well with the changes and struggles he faced, which eventually led him to become deviant.
