HDFS 2201 Course Activity: Needs Assessment After reading  The Family Life Education Needs of Midlife and Older Adults , answer the following questions. Each question should be at least three sentences long. Questions 3 & 4 have minimum word counts as well. Not meeting sentence or word count requirements will result in an automatic ½ points reduction for that question. Not fully answering the question will result in at least ½ points deduction for that question. 1. Why do the authors feel it is important to explore the needs of older adults? (5 points) The authors feel it is important to explore the needs of older adults because this population has not been provided with the attention it deserves in regards to family life education. There has been an increase in midlife and older adult populations, that have had limited attention given in family life education. Family life educations focus is enriching and strengthening individuals and families, this is crucial for midlife to older adults. There are several reasons for family life education in midlife to older adults from changing in family roles, increased caregiving, grand-parenting, and maintaining independence while aging. 2. How did the researchers develop the questions they used on their survey  (See Instrumentation and measurement) ? (5 points) The researchers developed the questions they used with respect to older individuals who may have vision problems. Considerable attention was given to the font size, spacing, leaders, and overall format of the questions. A 4-point scale was used and participants were asked to rate their level of 29 family life education topics. The responses ranged from very interested to not at all interested. At the end there was an open ended question that allowed participants to to list topics that were not listed that they would be interested in. 3. Review Table 2, what did the participants rank as the top three areas of family life education they were interested in learning more about? Did any of the top three interests surprise you?  Why or why not? Minimum 100 words. (5 points) The participants ranked nutrition and health, fitness and exercise, and positive aspects of aging as the top three areas of family life education they were interested in learning more about. When I read the other areas of interest it made sense to me that these were the top three. As we get older it may become a tendency to lack on nutrition and health. This is an important are to learn more about because as we grow older it is our responsibility to ensure we are taking care of our bodies and to watch the things we eat. Fitness and exercise is important as well. Just because an older person may not be necessarily able to keep up with someone who is say twenty at the gym doesn’t mean they should take their own exercise and fitness into consideration. Simple walks, stair climbs, and swimming are all great ways for older people to ensure they are staying in shape. Positive aspects of living is a great area of interest because it could help in a decline of depression. 4. Review Table 2 again, what do you find most interesting about the results and why? Minimum 200 words. (5 points)
HDFS 2201 Course Activity: Needs Assessment I find most interesting that adult day care scores so low on the bottom. There are so many benefits to adult daycare, although it may not be ideal for them. It’s a way of getting out and about instead of being stuck at home or even stuck in a nursing home all day. I feel that staring at the same walls can lead to an increase in depression when it comes to older people. It’s interesting that depression was much higher on the list and as I stated I feel that adult daycare could and would help that decrease. Retirement planning also scored pretty low on the chart. I figured that this would score much higher, because the whole point in retirement planning is to ensure you would not have to worry about your future. Myths and realities to aging is a great area to learn more about in my opinion. I always hear older people talk about getting old and the horrible things that come with it, it’s no wonder younger people dread the 50’s and above. This could help bring more understand to the actual facts of aging and debunk the myths, everyone ages it’s a process we can’t stop.
