GAP (A) SUBMISSION #1 1. Identify an injustice or inequality in your community. - I've noticed an injustice in the community that centers around the moms for Liberty committee. This specific group of conservatives is exclusive to the state of Florida and works against inclusion of topics related to LGBT rights, race and ethnicity, critical race theory, and discrimination in school curriculums. This group has also pushed for the removal of books that discuss gender and sexuality from school libraries. In light of current events, this group has discriminated against the LGBTQ community and many racial groups, disrupting school board meetings by reading lewd book passages. Our school's curriculum has been changed to hide the reality of our history with slavery, bigotry, and discrimination because of this committee's extensive influence. 2. Provide a brief synopsis of the issue and include background/statistics from at least one legitimate source. - Even though Moms for Liberty is fairly new they are backed by our Governor Ron DeSantis. Due to this they have attracted plenty of headlines throughout the media. My biggest issue with this committee is its campaign against critical race theory and race and ethnicity in our school’s curriculum. This committee has proven time and time again how racist it truly is. Statistics show that “almost half of all moms for Liberty chapters are politically conservative and that most of its members (84%) are White” (Sinha and Zebrano, 2023). This statistic is important because it shows how underrepresented minorities are throughout this committees’ members. It’s important that our future generations are learning about every piece of our history not some filtered version to make America look good. Even the Germans teach their future generations are the atrocities in their history i.e. the Holocaust and Nazis. Critical Race Theory is under attack and because of this schools and their staff are placed under extreme scrutiny to filter their classrooms. “Since January 2021, 44 states have introduced bills or taken other steps that would restrict teaching critical race theory or limit how teachers can discuss racism and sexism” (Schwartz, 2024). People tend to form misconceptions about what Critical Race Theory actually is. It recognizes that the social fabric of this country is still woven together by the legacies of slavery, segregation, and the granting of second-class citizenship to Black Americans and other people of color. 3. Using terminology from our course (and defining those terms), discuss how your issue is related to our course materials in some way. - It's critical that the events of our history are presented uncensored, just as they happened. This course and my problem are connected in that it emphasizes the value of preserving our identities, which include our gender, sexual orientation, and race. I've gained confidence in my identity throughout this course. If we ignore this aspect of our history, we're illustrating to our future generations that there was never a period in history when African Americans were thought to be less than human.
4. Provide details (who, what, when, where etc.) of the “grassroots action” plan you will take to address the injustice. - As far as I'm concerned, the best thing I can do is spread the word among parents, educators, kids, and political officials that Critical Race Theory is something that should be encouraged and studied by future generations rather than something that should be prohibited. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it" is my all-time favorite quote. This quotation serves as an example of how future generations and American leaders may be condemned to repeat the horrors we are attempting to erase if we suppress this aspect of our past.
